Alright need some electrical expertise... I'm in the process of building a new cabin out on my land and need some electrical advice. The cabin will not have commercial power because of its location so I want to wire it up for generator only power. The generator is going to be anywhere from a 5k watt to a 6250 and will only run lights, small water pump, small kitchen appliances and occasionally a small 110 a/c window unit.
What do I need inorder to do this? The generator will sit in a remote spot and when I crank it - I want to be able to flip a breaker and it be ready. I dont want to have to mess with running a cable from the generator to the cabin every time I'm ready for power - i want it to be ready when its fired up.
Preciate the help!

first thing id say is figure out how big of generator youre gonna need. if you look around at home depot or lowes, they pretty much have everything you need. whatever you do, dont take a shortcut. its not worth it!

Get a small breaker box that matches the output of the gen you pick out.

Put the lights on one 15 amp circuit, Kitchen outlets on a 20 amp circuit, the AC unit on its own single 20 amp circuit, and the water pump on its own circuit (15-20 amps depending on its draw)

20 amp circuits need #12 wire and 15 amp circuits need #14 wire

Yep run all your wires to a small panel.  Then just run a big wire you will probably need a number 6 depending on the generator, hook one end to the generator and the other end to the main on the small panel.  What i would do is wire a pig tail to the generator and wire a 50 amp plug onto the wire that goes to the main in the panel.  so it would be just plug and play if you ever wanted to have the generator serviced or used somewhere else.

Not all generators are created equal. You can get by with lesser watt generator if you get a good quality one. I have a generac 4000 watt, and a Honda 3000 watt. The honda handles the load better even though it has a lower rating. The honda inverter generators are awesome. I love mine. You can put it 20 feet away, and barely hear it, and it is great on gas.

Depending on how remote. I would put a breaker box on the cabin and run conduit under ground from the box to a stub out where the generator is. Where you stub out I would put a box and use a short pigtail to the generator.
On the stub out use a water proof box and put in a 220 stove outlet. (female) Then buy a 5' range cord and the 220 snap lock male plug for the generator. Be sure when you wire the box at the cabin be aware of the two phases. 110 on each leg. Then you can use al of the power and most generator have a 30 AMP breaker on them. If you try the 110 outlets they are 15 amp and will not hold up.
This way you can put the generator away when not in use.
This is how I have my house back fed for power outages. The only difference is you do not have permiante power. Clear as mud?

You may want to think about driving a ground rod where the generator will sit and then another one where the service will enter the cabin.

Home Depot or Lowes has just what you need for this. I think they call it an RV hookup or something like that. It has a hinged lid made to keep rain off the plug but it's far from waterproof. All the above suggestions are excellent.

1. Small breaker panel in the cabin.
2. Run conduit underground to a stub up by the generator.
3. Weatherproof box on stub.
4. Pigtail from the generator to the weatherproof box.
5. Ground rod at cabin and at stub. (most important in my opinion)
