i posted this in the Polaris section but not really much help. got a 97 sportsman 500. been cranking fine,it even has a new battery. wanted to ride this past weekend, went to load it up and all it would do is make a clicking sound from the syliond. was wondering if there is anyway to check it see if it is the slyniod or the starter. thanks.

Put a volt meter on the power post for the starter (red ( + ) to the starter post negative ( - ) to a good ground  , then turn on the ignition & pust the starter button , when the solinoid clicks does the starter have 12v (battery voltage) ..

Did you first check the volts at the battery to make sure it was good?

Just because a battery is NEW does not mean it is good.

Don't forget to check your battery terminals to security and tightness. Since you replaced the battery, maybe you never tightened the terminals tight enough and now they have worked loose and won't turn over the starter. The lights may come on and everything, but as soon as you place a big electrical load (like the starter) it can fail and make the solenoid click. It might even just die and do nothing. Every cirumstance is different.

If that seems ok, then follow the instruction mentioned above on testing the soleniod.

If all that fails, then come back and let us know. We'll point you in another direction of troubleshooting.

Dezz
