Im not sure on the power comparison.

but this is my suggestion if you decide on running a K&N..

Buy a foam pre filter and also buy the OuterWear pre filter cover.
the K&N needs it.

if thier is a slight power increase one way or another it wouldnt be enough to notice i would want to protect my motor before a small increase in power go with the uni

I've found UNI air filters work better than K&N, just an honest opinion, but save the money and you'll still have the same amount of power increase as you would with the k&n

My dealership recommended the UNI over the K&N...plus it was cheaper!

I've always been a K&N fan, but I'm leaning toward the UNI filter.  Has anyone used the K&N cleaning and oiling kit on a UNI?  I have a ton of K&N cleaning kits and would hate to have to start buying and stocking another cleaning kit, lol.

Technically speaking you'll get more airflow out of a K&N, assuming it's properly serviced.

Technically speaking, you'll get better filtration out if the Uni, assuming it's properly serviced.

Realistically, you might, maybe find a dyno sensative enough to tell the difference, but you'll never know by riding the machine.

My thoughts...  For more money, you can get less protection for your engine, and for more money yet you can buy another filter to go over the filter so that you can have protection for your engine but now you're recalculating the air flow again....
I say get the Uni.

So far as I know, every filter out there (except stock OEM replacements) come with good directions.
Stock filter directions are in the owners manual.

Here's my .02 cents on the filter battle.  Not only is having a filter that does it's job important, but having a clean filter is part of the equation.  For the price of one K&N, you can buy two Uni's.  I keep a spare cleaned and and oiled in a ziploc tub container that I take with me on weekend trips.  We all know that if you're not the lead quad in a group, you're more than likely riding through a horrendous dust cloud, which will dirty a filter pretty quickly.  On day 2 of the trip, I pop in the clean filter, which not only ensures peak performance, but maximizes dust filteration as well.

I've got to disagree with that, at least in part.

As the filters (any paper, foam, or gause filter anyhow) collect with dust and dirt, the filtration inproves dramatically.  The oily dirt that is stuck in and over the "holes' in the filter serves as a finer filter than the filter its self.  Just like a pool filter.  If you shoveled sand into your pool, you'd have dirty pool water, but when the sand is contained and the water passed through...  it comes out crystal clear.
That's how K&N makes their claims for advertising purposes.  Flow rates are based on a brand spankin' new filter, but the filtration is based on a filter that's just about plugged solid.

By all means, service the filter as often as you'd like for performance reasons.  For durability reasons, service it at 500 or a thousand miles.  They hold a LOT of junk before it becomes an issue.

A freshly oiled foam filter flows less air then one that is a little dirty.

I know this wasnt an original choice but I have ran k&n and Uni. I ran a K&n on my v-force and blew my motor and constantly gunked up my carbs from riding dusty trails and getting dust and dirt in my carbs and motor.

I ran the uni on my Rincon and I loved it. I assume all of them are made the way mine was with the thick red foam covered in teh slimy oil? REgardless I was very impressed with it. Made a big increase over stock filter with the mods I had on my bike.

Now the option that wasnt mentioned but I always suggest is a twin air. That was by far the absolute best filter I ever ran on my V-force. Lasted longer than the uni and IMO cleaned much better. Even with the uni I still gunked up my carbs occasionally. Now with the twin air if you follow the instructions and properly prepare it before you put it on the bike it will last better than k&n and uni. JMO
