Unless that's not the original motor than its the 22relb...  Call your local Orielly, auto zone, car quest, etc. and find the cheapest one, then call Orielly and tell them the price and they will match or beat it.  Plus orielly uses Fel-Pro gaskets for Yotas and they are the next best thing to stock IMO.

I've done headgaskets on 4 cyl before and its pretty easy because they are in the center of the car and there isn't much crap to take off, when you start doing v6's and 8's it gets tough cause its packed.  The gasket set will probably be anywear from $100 -$200.  Make sure you get the set because it comes with the valve cover gaskets, intake gaskets, etc.

BTW the "r" is the carbureteed version I believe.

They are excellent little trucks!  Just keep it clean and out of the weather or it will be a rusted mess in no time.

Good luck.

Usually when u do a head gasket job on a 2.4 u replace the timing chain guides. They always break and allow the timing chain get into the timing cover causing a water leak. If you've never replaced a head gasket I wouldn't start on a 2.4......ist a fun one. lol

Yep efi is standard on 88+, as said above if you've never done a head gasket job before this will not be the best one to learn on. Those trucks have about 75 million vacuum lines to keep track of and they all have to go back in the same places or you may have some running probs. It is a ohc engine and you absolutely have to replace the timing chain guides while in there, they do like to break and the timing cover will get cut by the chain very quickly and cause water to leak into the oil. Imo the 3VZ V6s in those trucks are also a pain cause they have all of the same vacuum lines and 2 ohc heads to deal with. They are very reliable trucks though. Is it a Minitruck or a T-100 you didn't say?

a tip i have for you- spend the extra money and get good quality gaskets, not the cheaper ones.

22-r = carb.
22-re= EFI
22-re-c-EFI celica(car, turbo ready)

I replaced the head gasket on my 82 with the 22r. It was pretty easy, I went ahead and replaced the timing chain which I would so if I were you. If you are looking for some help with toyotas I would you to yotatech.com they have helped me out alot since I got my truck.
