ive been thinking of getting a big bore atv, my rancher is fun but nothing like big bore power. I was going to trade it in on a new can am 800 but ive been watch'n a guy that ride with me and he is alway having problems out of his clutch or tranny like 3 out of 4 rides he was towed back. and he doesn't even ride it hard goes around big mud holes and water just riding on some 31 laws and it never gets dirty. is there any problem i need to try to advoid older 800's or upgrade clutches or something?

i went with a can-am for a few reasons, and like most should do, decide for yourself what suits your needs and not what your friends want you to ride!!!!!!
i have owned a few CATS, which were all good quads, i have a king quad 700, and a brute 750, and i have had very few issues with any of them. Always maintain your ride, make minor repairs before they become major problems, and if you throw on 31" laws and break something dont assume the quad is a P O S!!!!
i have witnessed all the major brands fail, some for lack of common sense, some for poor maintnance, some for reasons man can't comprehend, none seemed to be caused by what name is on it.
For the money, the brute is great, and for a bit more green the can-am kicks BUTT!!!!!!!!

do the prevenative maintenance for off road riding. stock machines are good off the floor for what they are but there are things that need to be done to prevent your bike from giving you trouble. if you ride in water use plenty of di-electric grease and snorkel it. if you wanna run big tires use throttle control and learn how to ride smart. dont ride in high gear in 4wd in thick nasty mud your just askin for trouble with the big tires. the can ams are very  electronic controlled machines but once you get them set up properly i have never had a problem out of mine and i run it with nothing but the bars sticking out of the water. take the time and do it right and you will love it.

with proper clutching, snorkels (including gas tank and tranny vent lines), and good tires, the can-ams are just about unstoppable.  i'm not going to say i've never had a problem on the trail, but i've never been towed back.  of course all my problems have been self induced from doing something stupid, but that's half the fun   set it up right and do some regular maintenance and you shouldn't have many problems.
