Just brought home a new sunset red 550 xp. I just couldnt wait 2 more months for the eps. Also I wanted to take advantage of the 2 year warranty. I test drove a dealer demo about 2 months ago. The ride was SUPER plush and i did not even feel small bumps. I could push the rear suspension down easilly. I have looked at 2 different 550's at seperate dealers. Both were easy to push the suspension down. Well my local dealer got in the sunset red color a few days ago so i bought that one(It is actually for my wife and she loves that color). I get it home and go for a short ride and it is no where as plush as i thought it would be. When i push down on the suspension it is very stiff. I currently own a 07 sportsman 800. My 800 is like a caddillac. Would there be a reason for this? Maybe the shocks like to get broke in? I had to put my air pressure at 3 psi to soften the ride. Also the pre-load is at the softest setting. I put 20 miles on it tonight. Also everything else about the machine i really like. I thought i read somewhere there was 2 different top shock mounts? Is that true? Thank you in advance for any input.

If it is 0 hour machine it will loosen up some with riding. They lube the a-arm bushings ect. at the factory but you need to exersice it a little to distrubute the grease and get everything moving. Also hthe springs will settle a little as well. Take it out and work the suspension a little. It's part of breaking it in.  My 850 is even more plush that the 800 was, it soaks up the rough stuff very well. Then again it has some weight on the 550.

I agree the 850 weighs about 60 more pounds. BUT I am a large guy(6'2"  285 pds)that should make it about equal for most riders.
lol. The other machines that i just pushed down on the suspension were brand new as well. I have to take my machine back to dealer to install a 3500# winch next Monday. I will ask them and compare it to a camo one there if it isnt sold yet. I will let you know if something is wrong.

Something is wrong. It should ride better than the 07. Mine came out of the crate and into my truck for the ride home. Since 0 miles it has rode very smooth. More plush than the 500 I have and my Dad's new 800.

Mine was BRAND new as well and I have to admit I thought it was more plush than the 800 from day 1 so Roofer is probably right. Although a little riding will loosen it up some if it is that noticably different than other 550's I'd think there must be a problem. Have you looked it over to see if you see anything out of the ordinary? May sound silly but is the temp close to what is was when you checked the other machines? There is only 1 upper shock mount. I will say that doing the push down on the rack test the 850 is stiffer than the 800 was,but the ride is more plush.

Just want to let you know my machine is 100% better today. I got home tonight and pushed on the suspension and it was like the others i tested. I then went for a ride( about 30 miles) and it rides MUCH better. I have no idea why this happened but im glad it is better( super plush now). I was worried I got a lemon or something. I had trouble sleeping last night i was so worried. Lol. Now I am ALL smiles. This machine is awesome! Also I called my dealer this morning and they told me to ride it more to break it in. I thought they were blowing smoke up my ***. But they were correct.

Miine was stiff too at first then got good.
260 killometers (160 miles) and i adjusted the front 1 less than full and rear 1 up.and i'm 117 kg(260 lbs)
Boy i shure like this machine better than my old wasp (2002 yellow 700) and now broken in it's just as nimble as the wasp but smother ride and much better fuel mileage, just have to get used to the thumping of the single cylinder over the twin
