i spent some time searching on google and on the forum here and i can't find much info regarding the difference between the sportsman 500 and the sportsman 500 HO.

I am curious because i have a 1999 SP500 and my buddy just bought a 2002 SP500 HO. We are both wondering what the differences are in the motors. Does does the HO make more HP or TQ different cams etc?

Any help would be much apprecaited!!

I belive you will get several different responses to this one.

"HO" means "High Output", that is a given.

NOW, with previous years models it was my understanding that after efi came out, the CV carb model got the "HO" title.. and usually with less options available also (less  braking options).

BUT NOW things seem to have changed and don't go the the Polaris website for clarification.. that is part of the problem... I in fact got into a detailed "discussion" with my dealer about just what the heck is on a "HO" model now (since the "HO" model lists for a lower price).

So I bought a new 2008 500 HO and here is what is on it... efi, adc, ebs... those are all the things that have previously been "options" available only for more money (my zero miles 500 was under $6k)... So the "HO" is now FI and allegedly has more output that a stock efi (but I have not dynoed it and most likely will not.. I use my bike to cross deserts not race)..

does anyone know if there are any differences in the engine/tranny of a standard 99' 500 and a 02' 500 HO?

The 500 H.O. has a different cam and a 40 mm carburetor, where as the original 500 has a 36 mm carburetor.

I agree with Xplorer, The main difference is the 40mm carb versus the 36mm carb.

... And not many parts interchange (per Pure Polaris part numbers).  For the front end, you'll have to change bearings to fit a 99 Axle on a 01-04 non-u-joint HO, and I"m not sure on the rear axle.

01-04 Ho's have 4 more HP, and a bigger carb.  Thats about it.  You won't really notice it too much, the HO will just seem peppier in the 30-45 mph climb. (from my take on things)

I have one of each - the HO and non-HO - HUGE Differance in power.  The HO has a significantly larger carb, more aggressive cam, and probably some differances internally that I am not aware of.  The rest of the bike is pretty much the same, as long as your 99 has the CV rear end.  The axles off a 2001, 02, 03 will interchange between any of the locking hub bikes.  Just friday I interchanged an old axle from my 97 onto the 02.

If as J Fred states that there is only a 4 hp differance, then there must be some amazing torque differance because the HO SPANKS the non-HO in a race all the way throughout the speeds.

Xplorer470 is exactly correct, the only difference between the two are the cam and the carb.

would there be a benefit to putting a HO carb on a standard sp500?

only if you changed the camshaft also. Adding a bigger carb with no where for the fuel to go won't do any good.
