Take a screw driver or a pair of pliers and jump the post's and see if it will roll over.  If it does first try cleaning all the connection and if it still doesnt work then yes its the soleniod

Mine has done that and it also started flashing the display after a while. What I found was that were the wiring harness goes over the frame directly under the seat had rubbed a hole in it. The wiring harness only has electrical tape wraped around it for pretection which sucks. I ride in Crosby alot and the sand got in there rubbed through 6 wires. It took a while but found the bad wires replaced them and put new wire looming around the wiring harness. I fixed it last year and has worked great since.

i think it is what ben said... i had the same problem on mine, and he warned me a year ago to check out the harness... well one day it just shut off... and never came back on, i tore the bike down to the frame, and completly tore apart the wiring harness, and found 3 broken wires under the seat where a sharp spot on the frame got it, and 1 of those wires was the hot going to the ignition, fixed them, re-electrical taped the entire thing, and wire loomed EVERYTHING... its been about 3 weeks now, and its workin good except for a bad battery now

my money's on a grounded wire harness. check the frame by the tank and battery, and check down your steering column...

Man it really sounds like a rubbed wire.  If your CDI was out, it probably wouldn't start at all.  The CDI controls your ignition and really has nothing to do with the starting circiut.

Im not sure bc it ran fine until i put that temp gauge and the light on it shorted out when i washed it and it got wet due to me not putting a inline fuse....but with the new regulator when the screen flashes volt about the 5th time the whole 4 wheeler shuts down and it did not do this b4...I have called steel horses and they want me to bring it in but gas is jus to expensive to make that trip so I really need 2 figure it out.

Whats the condition of your starter, check to see if you are getting voltage to it when you crank, if not look elsewhere, but if so, replace the starter.

The starter is good bc it turns over when i jump the solenoid but the start button nor the gauges work.

I'm thinking grounded wire or cdi box. I know you can even unplug your cdi and the bike will still turn over, just won't get spark. So, a bad cdi could cause what your symptoms are. Not sure about all the trouble shooting on the stator.  If you don't figure it out, I'd take it to Jeff @ Steel Horses. I know gas is expensive, but its well worth the drive

I would be SURE your battery is good... Mine thur Voltage up at RCOR and the battery was dead, all in all though I fried the starter and had to replace it.  After charging battery for 2 hours and replacing starter she fired right up.  Good rule of thumb like you said though is that if you can jump the solenoid or run hot jumper cable straight to negative post on solenoid and starter turns over, then starter should be good
