If it is older then a 08 the outter cover may not be sealed with the backing plate. on 06 and 07 outlanders and 07 Renegades the backing plate that mounts to the motor and trans warps and does not seal. I would buy the 08 update kit and put sealer on the orings that go between the inner cover and the motor and trans. Also put sealer between the inner and outter cover. I think there is a post from John Cannon on youtube about clutch sealing.

you also need to run a bead of silicone between the outer and inner cover around the stock gasket. they can and will leak there.

it should have the updated cover on it... the ideal thing to do is fill the cvt with nice clean water out of your garden hose and find the leak.. you can put a bead of rvt on the gasket... i dont and have never had an issue with the gasket leaking but then again we are in our all the time doing clutch stuff

Also, another place to look at is the bolts that hold the back cover on. Mine was leaking around them.

i have had mine apart several times and have come to the conclusion that the design for the cover flange in not adequate.  idealy, spacing should be reduced and a couple more fasteners added.  the flange is not substantial enough in my opinion to provide the needed clamping pressure with the current configuration.  it is important to snug the cover down equally(not unlike a tire) to ensure proper seal engagement.  I use bel-ray grease instead of silicone but either is fine.  Also, be very careful not to over torque the screws.  If sealed and installed properly the cover will work just be careful when doing so.  I would not put water in my housing but rather cap off the exhaust snorkel and provide a little pressure with a air compressor while spraying the sealing surface down with soapy water.  When you see bubbles you have found the leak.  Good luck.

agreed... but why would not put water in your cvt? what do you clean your clutches with? i use steel pads and carb cleaner... thats just spec more abrasive then water. I am not sure why everyone has this fear of water in the cvt cover it will hurt abosulutly nothing... especially comapred to what is used to clean the surfaces of the clutches anyway. I mena its not like your letting it sit there for a day fill it up look around for leaks and drain it... 20 min tops
