I ran (two) 1 1/4 hoses out of my stock air intake and up to the display pod. It ran fine but at half throttle and above, it starts cutting out like it's not getting gas. I know it has something to do with having too much or now too little air. What's going on? Can snorkels be installed and function properly without having to re-jet?

try taping or covering one of the snorkles and see how it runs. if the condition improves then it is definately running lean in the mid-range and top, which i am willing to bet it is. remember the carb basics :

idle to off idle= pilot
off idle to 2/3= needle
2/3 to WOT= main jet

you can either cover or reduce down the size of your snorkle openings until you get it back to operating like stock or raise the needle (move clip down) 2 slots and go up on the main about 4 points. example: 138 main goes to 142 main.

man, I have no idea what you are talking about. I know where the carb is located and that's about it. You think it was getting too much air with two 1 1/4 hoses?

Try as Randrball indicated. Cover one of the tubes and run it up to WOT (wide open throttle). It is possible you are letting in too much air. If it runs better than you WILL have to restrict intake air or jet the carb!

In my experience the answer is no. It would be a stroke of god for you to exactly match the airflow characteristics of the stock snorkel and air setup.

Two 1 1/4 inch snorkels will be severly too rich. Those are way to small and will never flow enough air. One 2 inch snorkel will flow air better, but heck you could even go bigger than a 2 inch. Those two small ones though, I wouldnt run a 650 on them.

tex you are correct. after revisiting this post and reading more closely, he never said anything about adding an additional hole to the breather box for the second snorkle. he only states adding two to the existing. assuming they are tee'd together, he is running way rich.

that's right. All I did was stick (2) 1 1/4 hoses into the stock air intake which is located on top of the cylinder head. You think it's getting too much air?

well without personally examining the machine we can only offer advice. just tape or use your hand and cover one of the snorkles (try partially closing to). if the condition improves, it is running lean. if it gets worse or no change then it is running rich. a few minutes invested with a quick ride down the road will point you in the right direction. i still think you have restricted the air flow which is causing a rich condition.

always honda,
Did you add the hoses and leave the stock breater tube open thus increasing air flow or did you block the stock breather and dedicate the air flow to the 2 1/4" hoses?

since I was experimenting, after I stuck those two hoses in the stock air intake, I tried to stuff a rag around the hoses to attempt to seal it off. But as I think about it, I remember that the top of the breather box looked like it was being sucked in when I revved the throttle.

Ya know that is true, but my airbox lid moves inward when I mash my gas and i'm running a 2" PVC Snorkel, which is an 1" larger than stock, I think the airbox lid does that all the time, I don't know though, I own a Hoda 300, he owns a 650, 2 completely different quads. I think you are running rich also though, why don't you try running 1 2" hose out the intake and see if it runs better.

I'll try that this weekend. I may just run it up through the plastic that is between the seat and gas tank. Hopefully that short snorkel would not require me to re-jet.

Removing the gas tank piece and running the snorkels through that opening is definately your best option, always honda. If you need any help, I would be more than glad to offer any assistance, as I am often by Lafayette.

Thanks Law. I work in Baton Rouge. Let me know the next time you're in Lafayette. It sounds like a lot of people have small problems once they start fooling with jets which is why I'm trying to avoid fooling around with the carb.

I seem to have a small problem with my snorkel on my rincon also, Ive got one 3 inch hose + a short section of 3" pvc. Well its a little sluggish on take off but mid and WOT it seems like its running better. What needs adjusting. By the way im not exactly sure but i think ive got a DJ150 and the needle on the 2nd clip.

You may be running lean at the pilot jet, did you tune your pilot jet at all? if not then you need to turn it out a turn or a half a turn, I would think that that is it.
You may also have garbage in your carburator, somebody else will have a better answer though.

Rejet rejet rejet, it'll give you a bit of a boost in power and it'll run a lot better.

i snorkled my 00 recon 250 w/ a 1.5" pvc and it idle nice but it wouldnt go so...
i cut the side off of a roll of teflon tape and trimmed it so it would fit in the snorkal underneath my elbow and if still getting to much air then put a peice of ducktape over the hole of the teflon tape roll and cut a small hole

I had this problem when I ran my 2" snorkel on my Rincon. It was getting to much velosity (air moving to fast) I put a spray can cap on the end of the snorkel and cut a hole about the size of a quarter then kept opening the hole up until it ran right. My new Brute is doing the same thing but not bad, I can tell because when I cover the snorkel with my fingers and restrict the hole it clears up. Good Luck!
Rejetting is still your best bet to keep all the power.

i had the same problem it was bogging down at higher rpms and you could go to the rear of the bike and smell it running rich. i was running a 175 jet and 1- 1.5 inch snorkel and a hmf eco series pipe. last weekend i got my kn filter in and i went to lowes. i measured the stock snorkel and then i measured the length from the ait box to where i was going to start upward with a 2inch pvc and it was almost the same so i  made it 2 inches from that point on in order to give it more flow through the bends from the front rack down. After this it is like a whole new bike... more power and worth the effort. Only thing i have to do is tie my other lines into the snorkel

Anyone have any pics and info on which lines to tie into my snorkel?
