Hughesnet is fine but exspensive to set up, plus the satellite is huge. Do they not have cable in your area.

hughs net is pure crap! do not get hughs net you can only download a certian amount then after that your high speed internet turns into more of a dail up connection. it sucks and i hate it,worst decision of my life.

yea i had the hughes net when it was direcway and it wasnt good at all.  like rubicon said you can only download so much then it goes really slow and the upload speed is worse then dial up.  if you can cell phone service where you live and cant get cable  you should try to do those internet plans is the laptop card.  i want to say its only $100 a month for unlimited d/l.  thats about as much as hughes net and its faster.

When I had Hughes net, there were 3 different plans depending on what spped you decided to go with. We didn't do alot of downloading so I can't verify the whole "once you download so much it's slows down" complaint. I am currently using the laptop card on this machine and depending on where you live and the service provider you choose it's ok but to me, it's not as fast as the slowest Hughes net package. If you live in a 3G area it will compete with satellite. The service plan on my laptop costs $60 a month. When I got it, you had to purchase the card and it was $200. I see now where they are giving the hardware away with a 2 year service agreement. Also, if you decide to go with the laptop card, there are a coulple of different styles of hardware cards. The one I'm using fits into a slot in the side of the laptop. PCMCIA I think it's called. There is one that will plug into the USB port that a friend of mine has. It seems to be just as fast but is alot more cumbersome sticking out the side or back of the computer and is easily damaged.

I dont know about Hughes net or Wildblue but we have Dish Network satellite DSL and it SUCKS.  Its just as slow as dial up.  My roomate got the plan and I dont know if she could have got a faster service by puchasing a more expensive plan, but I know the one we have sucks.

I'm not sure if they have it there or not but we ditched our other internet and got a wireless internet usb card from Verizon. It will work anywhere that a cell phone will work. It just plugs into a usb port so we can move it to any computer that we put the software on. It runs around 55 a month.

DO NOT get wildblue. It's terrible. They screw you every way possible. They start by charging you 300 just to set it up. Then instead of sending you a bill they just charge the card you used to pay for installation every month without you even realizing it. Then after you get tired of the crappy internet and want to cancel it, you can't just pay a disconnect fee, you have to pay the whole years contract you signed. Then after you finally get rid of their garbage, you are stuck with their satellite on your house that they won't buy back from you. Wildblue is a dang joke. Whatever you do, do not get it. You will hate yourself

I have wildblue.  Haven't been screwed over, but it isn't a great service.  I am still faster than dial-up but not by much.

I have WildBlue and am not satisfied with it.  I have the $70 a month package and it only works half of the time.  Within the past year they've replaced two modems and my LNB on the dish.

I was initially set up with Autopay until they removed $350 from my bank account without my permission.  When I asked them what the charge was for they told me it was for not returning my equipment.  They couldn't explain to me why I would need to return the equipment when I still have an active account and am using the equipment.  They told me it would take three weeks to return my money.  I questioned how they could remove it so quickly but they couldn't return it in the same amount of time.  I was calm and agreed after I made them give me a month of free service.  After the three weeks was up I called and asked what was going on and they hadn't even put in an order to refund my money at the beginning of the ordeal.  Now I wasn't so calm and friendly and all of a sudden they could expedite my refund and I would have it in 3-5 days.  Pure BS - all of it.  I figured out that in order to speak to someone that speaks english you have to be connected to some higher level customer service department that is very hard to connect with.

This is the only service available where I live.  You can get the Verizon card, which I tried, but unless you are within a certain area you cannot receive broadband speeds.  You get dial up speeds outside of the area.  They were running a 30 day trial on it and I am glad I did before I signed a contract.  My phone works fine at the house but the broadband service was not available.

Bottom line - explore every option available before satellite.  It is very overpriced and the customer service of WildBlue is lacking.  If I hadn't signed a contract I would probably be with dial up because the satellite is so slow and I don't ever know if it's going to work.  You asked...

You can now buy wireless routers that have a slot for a network card. They're around $200, but all of your computers can connect to this, with an ethernet cable or wireless.

I am going cellular but instead of using the laptop card i am using my cell phone via USB, and am sharing it on my home network to my other computers, not real fast with 2 computers on at a time but better then alternative, (Had hughesnet wasnt to bad just expensive) and it cost 25 bucks more a month for unlimited data plan on phone

I went with nextel's usb moden, it's a 3g device that works over the cell phone system, mine can easly get 700k down load, the latincy is a little high 300-400ms but thats mutch better then sattalite. the best part of it is it's portabilty, you can unplug the device and with a quick driver install it will work on another computer. they are great while on the road
it also has a thumb drive more as well and is expandable with micro sd cards
the down side is, if you dont get cellphone covrage in your area the modem may or may not work

I'm in the process of trying to get my hughes net dish moved from La to Ms. I bought the equipment up front. I've aimed many DTV dishes before but never the hughes net dish. So I call ughes net to see if there is a manual that will give me the approximate angles I need to start with seeing as how I'[ll be at a different longitude and latitude. After wading my way through the , press one for sales, two for service, three for technical support .............. I finally find the right option to speak with a live person. I can barely understand his version of the english language. (Indian, dot not feather). Anyway he tells me there is no such manual and if I moved the equipment myself it would void any warranty I have on the equipment. I asked him how much it would cost to have a hughes net rep come out and move it. He said it was up to the service company how much they charge. I asked him if he could give me their telephone number and he said no. Then in the next breath he asked me if I wanted them to come out and take it down. I asked him how he was going to get ahold of them and he tells me he is going to call them. I said you have the number you just can't give it to me? He said yep. I hung up.

I have hughesnet.  It's not a bad service if all you want to do is surf the web.  If your into downloading music and watching online videos, then any satellite internet is not for you.  You will exceed the fair access policy and be stuck with dial up speed until the counter resets.  The Hughes counter resets every 24 hours, the wild blue counter resets once a month.  I have the Pro package, $59 a month, with a download threshold of 375 Mb's per 24 hours.  My down speed is 1.5 MBps and up speed of 256 KBps.  Rain pretty much puts you out of commission.  It rain fades quicker than my Direct TV does, alot quicker.
