ok ive never really tore apart a atv motor but i do have it off the frame,i have a guy rebuild it 3 times same prob darn rings,so everyone tells me to tear it apart!ok is there any thing i should be really carefull and aware of,are any part of this motor pressed together?any help or advice would be appreciated! i ordered a book on it so,but i figured someone on here has done this before.and do you think it will be fine with piston, rings, wristpin, everytime he rebuilt it it had a chattering sound, it  wasnt the valves i actually seen him set them at the wright clearance so?he says everyone he has done made that sound and it did not do it before so i know it can be fixed and it is not normal, bike is only 1 year old.

IMO, either timing chain or crankshaft. Me and a buddy are about to take a 350 and a 500 apart to replace the crankshaft. If the timing chain is stretched, it will make a loud slapping sound. If the crankshaft is worn, it will make a knocking sound that getting louder as you rev it up. But once you get the book, there are plenty of troubleshooting tips in them. What kind did you get? I strongly recommend paying the extra money and buying a Honda manual, they are more detailed than Clymer manuals.

You said that you have had the rings replaced? There are alot of Honda's running with stretched timing chains and crankshaft going bad, if either of them completely break, it won't run. But even my mechanic said it wouldn't hurt them to ride them until you couldn't stand the noise or it breaks. And yeah, on the 350, we thought it was the valves at first. Lemme check some stuff and I'll try to give you some more options, I'll try to post again either tonight or tomorrow.

If it has ever been sunk it will be hard to keep it from smoking. that motor has small oil passeges in the block that get dirt and grit in them and even when you split the cases you dont get it all out then you rebuild it motor gets up to temperature dirt and grit breaks loose and eats up the new bearings and rings. when you rebuild it check rod to crank play mine made noises like that it was the rod but this motor is pretty simple to rebuild. good luck
