2006 sportsman 500. (carb) my fan doesn't come on.  I can hot wire it.  If I unlug the hot light switch the fan will come on and I get the hot engine warning of the speedometer.  The Haynes manual says I have a thermostatic switch and a hot light light switch.  I can't find the thermostatic switch.  My question is what actually tells the 06 when to turn the fan on.

there should be a thermostat on one of the corners of the radiator. You can run a hot wire and switch to that.

got a quick question

i have relocated my oil cooler on my big bear with the fan also, couldnt find where my switch was so i did away with the stock wiring and taped it off and ran a new wire from the battery to a switch then on to the fan

with it wired straight to the battery does it always have a draw on the battery from it, everytime i go outside it seems that my battery is weak and wont kick the bike over rite off the bat...is it the switch on the fan creating the draw or the stock wiring which im guessing is still wired to the battery somehow or another, do the stock wires that i taped off need to be tied together and then taped off or keep them separate and tape them off from each other?

it should not pull draw unless it it is being used. i would put a fuse inline between the bat and switch. as for the stock wires tape them up seprtly.

Just tap into the power wire going to the fan then. You will acomplish the same thing. You will have control. I wired mine to come on whenever the key is turned on. Havent over heated since.

yes but is the power wire going to the stock fan location always hot or does it only become hot when the temperature gauge says turn the fan on?  if i remember i tried to tie in and use that hot wire but maybe i didnt wire it right becuz i was still trying to ground it back out through the stock ground wire?  ill check into that though if ur correct then maybe thatll work better than how it is now becuz my battery is always dead it seems like and i just bought a new battery, the type like the optima batterys for trucks but for an atv

there is a groung wire and a power wire. The power wire will only turn the fan on after the bike gets to a sertain temp. You will run a new wire from the battery or an accessory wire to a switch then to the fan. Be sure to put an inline fuse in there somewhere. Run a hot wire to each of the wires on the back of the fan to find out which one is the power wire.
