I just started hearing a popping noise when the cluthes 1st engage
it doesnt do it any other time
any idea on what it may b

Sounds like a worn U-joint on the rear prop shaft. Put the bike in neutral and try to move the rear prop shaft with your hands. It should feel very solid. If you've got any play in it, you need to replace the U-joints.
