little known fact is that the p7100 came on much larger cummins engines ... 500 - 600 hp motors ... it replaced the previous rotary VE pumps which only made about 10,000psi cummins was able to use the pump to meet new emmisions laws for diesels in 1995 ... when we went to 500ppm low sulfur fuel (as opposed to Ultra low sulfer diesel at 15ppm currently in use)... not many realized it at that time or now ... that's why the 94-98 p-pumped motors also had cats ... that big pump could be run reliably at higher pressures to better atomize the fuel and improve emmisions ... when cummins went to the now hated VP-44 they were able to make even more pressure "reliably" and get rid of the cats ... in '03 they went with the common rail for even MORE pressure and better atomization ... alas in 04.5 dodge stuck the cats back on and moved hp to 325 and torque to 610 ... the thing most cummins' guys find amusing is that the 04.5 - 07 motors make a surpising amount of smoke stock ... will blacken a rear bumper in a thousand miles ... stone stock ... through the cat pretty impressive to think that in 1989 the 5.9 cummins made 160 hp at 400 tq and in 04.5 the same 5.9 made 325 hp and 610 tq ... same BASIC short block
