you can also take the top of the starter off by unscrewing the 2-5/16" bolts that run along the starter body. Once they are removed carefully take the top of the starter off wiggling it so that the top piece isn't caught on anything else. once you can see the armature; it is the thing in the center that spins and is a magnet. slide that out the opposite end and see if the brushes are working. Meaning they move back and forth, if not take a small screw driver and tap them out, then take a razor blade and lightly scrape the sides of the brushes to get all the corrosion off them. once that is done get a buddy to help and slide the armature back in place while holding the brushes in. Then put the starter back together... You can put some di-electric grease on the brushes and it help with the corrosion and also lube it some. Not guaranteeing that is the problem but it is cheaper than $100 for a new one.
