i got a 1997 sportsman 500. replaced the solenoid. now all i get is a click from the solenoid every time i push the starter button. I am guessing i need a starter. It was not making any kind of noise before it went out, and was cranking fine. I have been looking online for some info. I see that they talk about a rebuild kit for a starter if your armature is still good. How do you tell if it is still good. And how do i check to see if it is my starter. I guess i am asking for help in all kinds of ways. Is the starter and armature the same thing? on kind of help would be helpful at this point. and do any on you know where i could find good parts cheap on line. Thanks

Try holding the key while tapping on the starter with a wrench. It could have a bad spot in it. Those starters are known for having water intrusion. Look on Ebay, I got one for my '02 500 for about $100 new in box with a 1yr. warranty

Just search "polaris starter" or "Polaris Sportsman Starter" and you will get some hits. Its actually and ebay store that sells for all makes and models.

Put a meter on the starter wire while trying to start and to make sure you have power going to it.  If you do then replace the starter.

Check your battery first, be sure it is fully charged.

you can also take the top of the starter off by unscrewing the 2-5/16" bolts that run along the starter body. Once they are removed carefully take the top of the starter off wiggling it so that the top piece isn't caught on anything else. once you can see the armature; it is the thing in the center that spins and is a magnet. slide that out the opposite end and see if the brushes are working. Meaning they move back and forth, if not take a small screw driver and tap them out, then take a razor blade and lightly scrape the sides of the brushes to get all the corrosion off them. once that is done get a buddy to help and slide the armature back in place while holding the brushes in. Then put the starter back together... You can put some di-electric grease on the brushes and it help with the corrosion and also lube it some. Not guaranteeing that is the problem but it is cheaper than $100 for a new one.

like Po-Po said check the brushes in the starter and make sure they move in and out freely.  I had this problem twice i ordered a rebuild kit for 30 bucks and it comes with a new brush holder assembly and o rings for the case.  try that first
