You would have to do quite a bit of work for the ex to run with the raptor.  If you want to run with him, you might want to go with the raptor.  Besides, if you do all sorts of work to beat the raptor, the ex won't be all that reliable.

Yea unless you do some serious work to the EX it isn't going to keep up with the Raptor very good in a straight line but imo it will be a decent race with some corners and jumps as the EX is a much lighter and better balanced bike. My 460EX would run into the 80s mph wise but I never got a chance to race a Raptor with it. If you are on budget it will be hard to beat a 400EX imo they can be gotten for cheapish now and they have a heck of an aftermarket following behind them. If you are dead set on beating him though and money isn't as much of a problem, I'd suggest a LTR450 or the new YFZ450. A buddy of mine has a LTR big bored to 498 with 13-1 compression, Hot Cams Stage 2 cams, ported head, Yoshi pipe, Power Commander, K&N, and Dirt Digger clutch and I gotta say as much as I dislike Zukis that thing is a MONSTER power wise. Its by far the most powerfull bike I've ever been on, it will run circles around my Banchee and would have outrun my 460EX by a good margin too. The closest race hes ever been in was against a big bore Raptor 660 (I think it was a 686) with a HMF, K&N, Jet Kit, and clutch of some sort and he still got him by a good 3 bike lengths to about 80mph.

Firstly if you get that rapppy and it does in fact have a 3" lowering kit front and rear, take the rear off or adjust it to get it back up to stock height and leave the front on. With aftermarket pipes on the raptor if they are duals then the chain wille at a hole in the pipe because the lowering kit moves the rear end down to low
