lol its cool...look at it as two overlapping circles. One created by the fence and the other created by the cow at the very end of the rope. This is more difficult than I thought. Maybe I need to brush up on my geometry.

you guys want a tough one. here one ive been working on for a while. lets say you have a circular fence with a radius of x.  and you tie a horse with a rope to the perminter of the fence. how long must the rope be so he can eat exactly half of the circular lot.  express your answer in terms of x(the radius of the circular lot)

i cant figure this one out. it makes me mad.

if it makes it easier lets say the radius of the lot is 100 foot. how long does the rope need to be?

if the yard is a 100 foot circle. the rope has to be 29.32 feet long. give me something hard

Well with the cow tied to one point on the outer edge of a circle with diameter of 100 and radius of 50, 29.32 feet doesn't even allow the cow to reach the middle. There is no way it could eat half the grass in the pen.

your think about him eating half way accros..hes eating in a circle tied to the perimete of the fence if you give him 50 feet he will walk in a circle and eat i all. think of this way. when track runners start they start one ahead of the other but the run the same distance. becase the outer line would be longer if they started side by side.

ok if the radius is 50 foot, off the top of your head you say he needs 25 foot rope to walk around and eat hald of it. but eh outer 25 contains more area than the inner 25 foot.

i told yall i can explain this stuff

You are looking at it as if he were tied to the center. He is tied to the fence and the point at which he is tied is stationary. The length of the rope will have to be between 50 and 100 feet.

do  what?. the lenght of the rope has to be more than the radious of the fence.

exactly cody. i was told it is aproximatly 1.16 times the radius of the fence. but thats all i know. lol

100 foot circle has an area of 7850 ft2. a 50 foot circle has a area of 1962.5 ft2. so that tells you the inner 25 foot is roughly 4 times less area than the outer half of the circle. so that means you would have to lenghten the rope about 50% more if the was tied to a pole in the middle... if he was tied like the problem states you would need to shorten the rope about 50%.

Before you edited  your post I thought you were asking me if the rope had to be more than the radius.

No not walking around the outer edge but being tied to a point on the outer edge.

On you corral problem, I just worked through it in the last 15 minutes and determined that the rope, R, will be 1.158728473 times the radius of the corral.

yeah. i bet im on the right track. i got most of the sections figured out.  just one section is bothering me.

but you have to admit this one one of these problems that seems so dang simple till you actually start doing it.

In real life a problem like this would be simplified by assuming straight lines instead of arcs.

Or in real life if I had a round pen and I only wanted the cow to eat half of it I would put some cattle panels right down the middle.

I'm not even going to pretend I know how to figure out the problem but unless you take into account the extra length of the rope needed for the knots to tie it to the fence and around the animals neck then figure in the length of the animals neck from where the rope is tied all the way to it's teeth, your answer will be wrong.
