A town's population is 2000 in 1990.  By 1995, the population had decayed exponentially to 1248 people.
a) Write a function that models the population of the town as a function of the number of years since 1990.
b) What was the population in 2000?
c) When did the population fall below 1000?

#2
A bacteria population grows by 17% every 12 hours.  How long will it take to double?

I'm not going to do the work for you, lord knows I couldn't get anyone to do it for me.  Break out that math book and start reading.  Sometimes they're hard to follow by yourself, but math books give step by step instructions.  Getting the answers from someone on here is not going to help you learn the math; you can only accomplish that by doing it on your own.  Thankfully, I took dual enrollment math through calculus in high school so I haven't had to take any math in college other than the math involved in chemistry and organic chemistry.  I will tell you that the answer for the second problem is much more than 24 hrs.

*Edit
Wow, when I originally clicked reply there were only two responses.

do what? he said expontial decay.  so lets assume you mean continous decay. then you will use the decay function. then thre has to be the constant e in there somewhere...

what math is this

Not sure about the first part, but the 2nd and third are wrong for sure.
b is 496
c is 1997
Pretty sure about that.

.91 is the rate at which the pop is decreasing, thus .91^5 (5 years since 1990) =6.42 then you multiply that x 2000 (your starting value) and you get roughly 1248 ppl which is the pop in 1995

^this is to check your equation

try 52.8 hours for # 2 if it is asking for an exact answer. It is 60 hours if it is just wanting 12 hour increments

sorry guys didnt see yall saw that number 1 worked

for number 2 im getting

70.572 hours

200 (doubling 100) = 70.572(1.417)+100

where 100 is the initial value and 1.417 is the percent increase every hour

dont know 1.

but if you have to increas a 100% and in 12 hours it reaches 17%...divide 100% by 17% abd you get 5.882. so you multiply 5.882 times 12 and you get 70.588 hours to double.

This is right, beat me to it.  I did some reminding myself and went and looked up exponential functions again.  Then i figured it out and you had already got it crap. lol O well this was fun brings me back to my old pre-calc days in high school.

yeah remember functions man f(x)=x type stuff example f(x)=(x-5)  x=5  f(5)=(5-5) sooo f(5)= 0 he needs to make a function using this form with an exponential funtion we used this a ton in micro biology then to find the given population all you have to do then is plug in the value to the function you can even chart and graph it....
