lightmud -> Belt Help (9/18/2008 9:22:40 PM)

Maybe a dumb question but this is my first auto and I don't want to mess anything up. How can you tell if the belt needs replaced? While riding tonight, it slipped a little while i was climbing a hill but it wasn't bad. Then when i got on the trail it wouldn't pick up speed. When i gave it more gas it felt like the engine was stalling or something but i am sure it just has to do with the belt.

Was the engine stalling or was it revving up, but you were not going anywhere?

If the engine was stalling, then this has nothing to do with your belt.

If the engine was revving up but you were not moving forward, then this could be a sign of a badly worn belt. It could also be a sign of a wet belt. It could also mean that your centrifugal clutch is gone, and nothing be wrong with the belt.
The way to know if a Yamaha atv needs its belt replaced is by inspecting and measuing it. A manual or the dealer should be able to tell you what the width measurement should be.
If I remember correctly, the belt should measure between 1.18" - 1.26".
Any lower than 1.18 means belt replacement is required.

Yeah the engine was revving up but not gaining speed. It would top out at about 30mph and i was not in any mud or water so it shouldn't be wet.

It COULD be the belt.....I would check it just to be sure.
Take a ruler, or a Vernier Caliper is best, and measure the width of the belt.
Also, look at the condition of the belt. It should not be glazed on its sides, nor should it have any cracking/dryness/missing parts/etc....

And to answer a question that you are gonna asked later, the best belt is Factory OEM drive belts.
NOTHING last longer or gives better performance than OEM drivebelts.....Theres a reason why they are so expensive.

Thanks.

Well twice i have had to drain the tranny twice (leak in the snorkel) and both times a fluid that looks like milky oil has drained out. Is that normal? Is it possibly just water and grease mixed together?

Dezz -> RE: Belt Help (10/9/2008 8:35:48 PM)

Because you have now swamped it twice, and have a milky fluid come out, then you HAVE TO remove the belt cover and inspect it and service the clutch (regrease it).....driving without doing this can do farther wear and can cause premature wear.
Also, since you have a milky fluid coming out, I suspect you have a crank seal or transmission seal bad. It is leaking oil into the belt housing, and mixing with the water, causing the milky solution. I could be totally wrong hwere, but it is something you need to check. This oil will also cause belt slippage.
MOST of the time, the grease in the clutch can cause dirty water to come out, but usually not milky.

Go to this website for excellent directions with pictures of how to service the clutch

Good luck with it

Thanks dezz. Let me go back and clarify my story a little. When i first got the quad (a few weeks ago) i drove it for a few miles (absolutely no mud or water) and the belt starting slipping. This is when i made this post. I then put on a new belt and cleaned it out and regreased it (it was full of mud and a little dirty water that had a bit of a black tint to it). Been driving it with no problems for about a week now just around the house. Then this evening i hit a few mud holes just deep enough to hit the bottom of the tranny. I got home, washed it off and pulled the drain and a little "dark" water that feels slick came out. Now before i went riding today, i pulled the drain to see if any oil would come out and nothing came out. It was only after i hit the mud and washed it off that the dark liquid came out.

Kind of a long story but i thought it might be necessary to help diagnose the problem.

OK...now that you explained it more, then I suspect you have nothing wrong. You got water into the belt casing, and what you had leak out was a discolored, water/grease mix. Not that big of a deal.
BUT, I would service the clutch again anyway. Tale it apart and regrease. Reason being, you don't know what was in that water (Sand, mud, dirt) and it will get into the grease and act like grit/sandpaper. It can/will wear out the rollers and ramps in which those rollers move in.

This is why I think that anytime the belt housing gets water in it, it is a MUST to do a service. It is easy maintenance, fairly inexpensive, and can go a long way with extending the life of the drivetrain.

Thanks for all of your help dezz. I will go back in and regrease. And if i were to have a bad seal, what all would be involved in replacing it?
