If anyone is looking for a winch I'd recommend a gorilla.  They are compared to warn in all thier tests.  I have tested out thier winches in several situations.  I have broken them and they have been replaced.  They have great customer service.  They are less expensive on ebay but you sacrafice customer service.  When you buy from their website they are 100% backed.  I bought from their website incase I broke anything.  I have put these through a number of different tests in snow, mud, rocks, rain, creeks, etc.  here is a link to check them out   http://www.gorillawinches.com/atv-winches

the older ones are good but the ones they make now arent. viper outperforms them. i had the monkey ones and two guys i know have them and they are sorry. both have broken b 4 one got used 1 time and didnt work since. the other broke completely but got another and its ok.

best bang for the buck is viper. but i am just stating the facts ive seen not trying to bash. im glad its working out good for u though.

Problem is,,, they could do so much better,,,,, why does it take a week or more to get an email response? That's just rediculous,,,, besides their product sure seems to be inferior to other winches. Bought a Viper for my sil's atv a few months ago,,,, used several times (just like ape winch) and it still works great,,,, even the relay still functions properly,,,, and that's the first thing to crater on the ape stuff,,,,, it may be just frustrations talking here, but,,,, geez,,,,, senseless on their part to ignore customers.

Viper has great customer service.  I emailed them on Sunday and got a reply 2 hours later.  They usually reply an hour or two after I email them.  We have a 4500 lb and a 2500 lb., both seem to be great and a super price.

viper has great customer service b4 and after the sale. i havent had any probs with mine. this last time i though something broke on it but i was riding rough this last ride but i got it home and noticed the ground loosened up just enough not to engage. (hitting a lot of downed trees from the hurricane one caught it and turned it and it further loosened from the vibrations)  tightned it up and there she  went.

Best bang for the buck is definately a Viper! Me and 6 other riding buddies all have them and they never skip a beat. I do wish I went a tiny bit larger though but for the price I could just buy another and keep the 2500# for a spare.

i have a monkey winch and had a problem with it when i first got it. i emailed them and they responded within a couple hours . i sent mine in, they fixed it and it has worked flawlessly ever since. but i did take it apart when i got it back and did a little greasing and waterproofing of my own. that really seemed to help alot.

Well,,,, my 3k 'big ape' stripped all the gears in it a few months back,,,, sent emails and called for 3 days before I got a response,,,, they sent new gears and I rebuilt it. Now my 2.5k went out,,,, and it's the newest one with the least amount of use,,,,, and it's SUPPOSED to be WATERPROOF,,,,, and when I took it apart the insides were fubar from water getting inside ,,,, sent an email 3 days ago and have had no response at all. Went ahead and ordered a couple of Viper Winches,,,,

And yeah,,, the monkey/big ape winches are the g o r i l l a winches,,,,, not buying anymore,,,,,

The winch company isn't the same as the axel company if that is what you are asking.

Grilla winches are JUNK!! I've had 2 of them break after one use, and 1 quit working before I could use it. It worked fine when I put it on.  Waterproof??? Yeah right!!!

For all who buy a cheap winch and don't fully trust the waterproofness of it, take it apart if you are mechanically inclined and do a full inspection of the possible water entry points and either seal or o-ring the questionable areas. Also adding more lube while you're in there can't hurt. I'm sure any winch will be more dependable after this little preventative maintenance and you will have a better idea of how your winch functions. BTW, I checked my Viper Max when I got it and it WAS fully sealed.  Glad I saved $$$ on this winch and even got another for the rear and another for a backup (just in case).

warn or nothing!!!!

i second that.  i think when it comes to stuff like winches you get what you pay for.  there is a reason that Warn has been on the top for so long.  they have great products and they back their products.  i sent them an email when mine quit working and included my phone number.  they emailed me a schematic of the winch and a service technician called me.  he helped me on the phone for around 45 minutes to an hour.  we finally traced it back to a bad connection on the little power wire that is connected to the ignition switch so that the key has to be on to use the winch.

Warn all the way!!!

Are you guys that are having problems with the monkey winches doing a lot of water riding?  I was looking at one and my riding is mostly trails and a little mud so would they hold up for those conditions?
