Hank5697 -> 02 RUBICON STUCK IN GEAR. (9/7/2008 11:12:09 AM)

I went to take a evening ride yesterday, when I fired my bike up and headed down the trail it shifted fine in D1 mode, I stopped to take a break, when I started back up and tried to take off, the bike was stuck in 4th or 5th gear and would not shift down. Just would not change gear at all even in ESP.  I tried the reset procedure, and the recalibrate shifter motor procedure. I took the shifter motor off and apart, I cleaned it up and reinstalled it and still nothing......Any suggestions???????? It is flashing (code-5) & (code-6)

Those are both angle sensor codes.. Have you had the angle sensor off the bike , is so did you pre-load it when you installed it..

Yes I changed it the last time and yes I pre-loaded it.  I tried to calibrate the shift motor and it usually whines for about 3 seconds during calibration but this last time I could not get it to do anything, so I took the shift motor off then went through the calibration sequence and the motor rotated. So what is your opinion on the next move?

You'll have to remove the shift control motor again and using your finger stick it in the hole where the shift control motor goes and try to turn the reduction gear ..

I done that and it is not seized, but I noticed that when I done the calibration sequence that the shift motor did not go for 3 seconds while I had it out. It spun for like a split second then stopped.  Is there any way around this ongoing angle sensor problem with Honda's if not, I believe we need to develop one, watcha think?

The shift control motor won't spin when off the bike and the coupler still connected , because when the shift motor is off the engine (and you try to initialize it or shift a gear) the ECM sees the swash plate isn't moving (which is monitored by the angle sensor) and cuts voltage to the shift motor..

So would changing the angle sensor be my best bet?  This will make the third one since Feb.  I'm just about done with this darn bike.

Does the angle sensor (or old one) look like the heat from the header started to melt it..?

Hank5697 -> RE: 02 RUBICON STUCK IN GEAR. (9/8/2008 11:36:07 AM)

No it does not have any indication of heat damage. I have been doing some research on this ongoing angle sensor problem and I ran into a guy who actually took his angle sensor apart and said it had water in it which was causing his test meter to jump all over the place, he said he gently pryed it apart dried up the water inside then plastic welded it back together. He has not had a problem since, Whats your opinion on this? (worth a shot) Oh and I also made a heat shield for angle sensor number two.

My Rubicon had the same problem. Its the angle sensor man.

Taking it to a dealer today, also gonna have the valves adjusted, just rolled to the 2,000 mile mark.
