FlaMtnBkr -> Using cheaper speakers in audio pipe? (9/5/2008 12:19:38 PM)

I was wondering if anyone has tried using any of the cheaper marine speakers available on ebay and other web sites? I guess I figured if I am going to use a somewhat cheap amp (pyramid 240w) what is the point of using high end speakers that are limited by the amp?

I guess I also assume even cheap aftermarket speakers will probably sound better than most factory cardboard cone car speakers. I have seen pyle and boss brand speakers in the $35 range when the polks are $80 with shipping.

Anyone tried any of the cheaper speakers and did they sound ok? Any thoughts on the issue?

I am medically disabled and not able to work right now so any money I can save is a big deal to me.

Thanks!

On my first set up, I used the cheap $19 6 X 9's from WalMart in an igloo ice chest.  The speakers worked great until I got drunk and lost the whole setup.  Just make sure they are not paper cones....use the polypropylene cones.  They are somewhat weather resistant.

I am using the Pyle speakers. They distort pretty bad at higher volumes but they are water proof.

Yeah the main difference is sound quality!  I went with the boss 6.5 marine speakers and they were like $40 shipped.  Have been going strong for two years!  I have my amp gain at about 50% and when I crank the mp3 player up there is hardly any distortion!
