I'm split decision on this.  I'm glad Honda has finally brought out an IRS bike, but why not on the S or ES models?  If the tranny in the Rancher AT is like that of the Rincon or the old AT's, then the BB will still be better in the mud.  Someone please tell me that they have lowered the gear ratio in the new ones.

Still no diff lock though...........Honda will probably start putting them in the bikes here in about 10 years.  Just long enough for another great technological advance to jump into the quads.  In which Honda will still be umteen years behind in putting it in their quads.

We'll have to wait to see what the 420 is like. Although it has been released, we are unsure how the tranny is setup. If it is like the rincon, it could be a dog. From the way it sounds, it isn't the rincon tranny, and should be AWESOME.

exactly. and there is no reason why it would be any different because the tranny from the previus years has been excellent

It all depends. The big bear is a great quad, I about bought one. However, it is so freaking slow.  The 420s still have some good bottom end, but are very nimble and quick.  I can't imagine what the new 420at will be like. Don't bash the tranny, we don't even know exactly what it is. It has some similarities with current ones (Rubicon) but at the same time appears different. We will just have to see, but don't hate on a quad just because it is a Honda, that is all you guys are doing because we don't even know what the 420at is like.  The Big Bear is a great quad, don't get me wrong, but besides a locker, I really don't see any true advantage. I'm no hypocrite, so I will add that my opinion is based on what is on paper. I could be wrong and it may be a flop like the old 400at, but no reason it shouldn't be one of the best selling quads, atleast in the Honda lineup.

I like Hondas.  A lot.  They make me look good when I'm towing them out!    I am interested to see what this rancher has.   It should be a contender, but like you said.  Gotta see how they transfer that power to the wheels with this new trans.  There's just something I like about a motor that's been on the market over 10 yrs with no worries.  I'll take the bear's reliability any day over a new motor/trans design.

Very true kidsoncoffee.  That wasn't directed at you by any means, after reading it again it kinda seemed like it was, just wanted to make that clear. If only they had done the manual tranny, but oh well, atleast we have IRS.  This secures honda on the top spot for another few years.  As I said, the big bear is one awesome quad. Also, as kidsoncoffee stated, the bb is powered by a proven motor. Even the regular 420 hasn't been out long enough to know if it will hold up. It is a guessing game. Either way, it all depends on how you will use it.  I still at times regret not getting the big bear (only reason I didn't was because it was still SRA when I was shopping).

Yeah.  These things are slow as dirt, but I don't mind it lacking the top end.  I don't really have anywhere or any reason to open it up.  The trails where I ride are usually just covered in water or straight mud.  Not much on the dry end where top end is needed.  And I LOVE the manual shift on this thing.  The bear is one of the last of it's kind with the true auto clutch manual shift.  I'll be stepping up to a Rhino and Grizz once this one's paid off, so I'll have to trust the auto and belt drive, but I'm not looking forward to it in that aspect.  The rancher is a fully capable quad, diff lock or not, that will do pretty much anything a bear will do.  If you do nothing but pure mud, then the bear is gonna be your bike.  If you're more of a 50/50 trail mud mix, then go with the rancher, because you're not gonna like how slow the bear is on dry ground.

^^Well said, couldn't agree more. I just hope we aren't let down with the tranny setup. According to the specs, it should be more powerful than the current 420s.  However, if they go for anywhere near retail, not worth it. Not sure the numbers, but they are asking more for them than other manufacturers are asking for much larger fully featured quads.

I bought a '07 BB 4x4 IRS and have had a hard time finding all the after market accessories available for other quads. Other than that, the BB is a very solid built bike with amazing torque. I'm pretty happy with it.

Most of the aftermarket parts for the 2006 big bears will work on the 07 and 08s.  The lift kits are different as well as the springs, but pretty much everything else is the same.

Thanks for the info. I've been wondering if '06,'07,'08 parts interchanged, but nobody could be sure enough to tell me. Is your BB pretty stable w/ 27's, 2" of lift and 1.5" spacers? I got 1" spacers and want 2" of lift and 27's. I don't want it to be top heavy though because I ride up here in the mountains a lot. What do you think?

The spacers give you a wider footprint which makes for more stability.  The 2" lift isn't gonna throw you off camber much more than stock height will.  I'm gonna throw some 29.5s under it soon, but I'm sure it will knock the stability factor down a peg or two.
