Barret M82A1... Poor Texas deer don't stand a chance...  Seriously... Personal preference has to be brought into the equation.. What kind of environment will you be shooting in/from... If you will be shooting a lane or close in...(out to 300yds) then the .243, .308 will more than do the job... the 7mm round was one of the most popular sniper rounds for over 30 years and has the get out there covered... With a good scope and breathing control you can lay it out there to 800 yards with practice...

I know this was not one of your choices, but I shoot a Remington 7-08.  Been deer hunting with that gun for a while now with no complaints.  Sometimes it just boils down to personal preference.

I will second this one. Best of both worlds . 7mm bullet and the short action. Reminton model 7-- 7mm-08  light to carry.

I don't understand why people need such large rifles for deer. If you were hunting elk then I would use a 7mm or .308. A white tail deer will have a hole blown out of the other side. I shoot a .270 and love it. I just purchased a wsm 270 for my son. I love shooting it too. In fact, I am going to buy me one next year. If you can't handle the recoil of the larger rifles then find one that you can handle without flinching when you pull the trigger. Shot placement is the key and if you can't stay on target because the recoil is too much, then you better get something a little tamer like a 270 or 30-06.

Since when did a 30/06 become tamer than a .308?

Clear shots I like a 243.  In the thick stuff I bring the old lever action 30/30

Must be nice to use rifles for deer hunting. Where I hunt in WI are county is a shotgun only county. I do get the 870 express to reach about 175yds with hornady slugs.

I have been shootin' a 270 for years and killed deer close to 300 yds, however on your question.  Between the 2, I would choose the .308.  It has alot less recoil and is gonna take down anything.  Now, if you hunt out west where you are gonna have alot of shots at 300 - 400 yards +, then maybe something else.  Proper range time and practice at multiple ranges you will be effective with any weapon (up to it's limitations of course). IMO
