My mistake then. Sorry, maybe I was confused and it was the 850 he has not been on yet.

I haven't been on an 850 EPS.
I've been on both a 550 and 850 non-EPS, and a 550 EPS.

It's the same type of clutch as the SPMN, that was a roller clutch as well.  The new clutch is redesigned to be better, but it's still the same basic design.  It does turn in the opposite direction, so if you ever find yourself needing to remove the clutch remember the bolt is left hand threaded.

Does the roller setup include a wet clutch like the Yami/Zuki/Cat's?

So it's still grab-n-go.  Pretty odd that Po refuses to swap to the wet clutch setup IMO.  The current setup gives them the hole shot, but kills the belt in sticky situations.  Pros n cons to both I guess.

So when you say "roller clutch" you are talking about the little rollers that the helix slides on VS the old style with buttons..??

with the improvement in the clutch it really doesn't damage the belt.
the starter clutch adds cost and weight to the machine.

it's a 4/156 bolt pattern, like the old style.  The different thing is it uses M10 studs rather than 3/8, so you'll need new lugnuts.  The good news is this is the size of lugnut most japanese bikes run.

That is good news, having other brands and always changing wheels and tires around for differnt applications, It actually was sort of a pain to keep all differnt type lugnuts seperated just for Poalris . Its not just Japan machines, I am pretty sure Polaris was the only mfg not using M10s. To me that is good news that they are joing the crowd on that deal. Thanks for the info big T.

Do You hapen to know the widths of  the OEM rims and what offsets there runing now. They look sorta like 6/1s on the front maybe, and 7/1s on the back.

I have pretty much sorted out the wheels I am planning on going with, to try and take care of the rock issues I think the OEM 14s will have when they are bouncing off them, I am planning on going with the 14" Hypers that are a Carbon fiber material with replaceable carbon fiber beadlocks and there likely quite a bit lighter than the OEM Cast 14s.  They offer them in the 4/156 pattern and in several different widths and offsets. I think I may order the rims pretty soon just to get ready for the sp850s arival. The only hold up I have is what offset to order to keep the track width close to stock as possible and to get the right widths that I will need, I will use 26"x14" Bighorns to go with the new rims.

I haven't been on an 850 EPS.
I've been on both a 550 and 850 non-EPS, and a 550 EPS.

Big-T-I'm hearing a rumor that the non-EPS is alot easier to steer that the old Sportsman. I do alot of riding on slow trails where steering effort comes more into play. I am about to have shoulder surgery and have a deposit down on an 850 EPS but they won't be in until Dec. My main excuse for buying a XP is for the EPS because I will have a 6 month recovery from the surgery and can't go that long without riding, and I don't want to re-injure my shoulder. BUT I am considering a non-EPS if they are alot easier to steer than the current Sportsman. I read your post where you said it was like steering a 90 but I assume that was the EPS machine. What is your opinion on how much easier the non-EPS than say an 08 800?

Sorry for the long post.

Thanks

hard to quantify, but I feel that the XP is easier to steer than the SPMN.  maybe 25% easier or so by my feeling.

Thanks. My dealer is going to call me when he gets the first XP so I can ride it. Hopefully I'll find it easy enough to steer so I don't have to wait until Dec.

Who exactly built the motor in the 850. Was it all polaris, or did ktm or weber pitch in? Any of these are great engines. i was just wondering. I have a msx 110 jet ski, loads of power and is tough, no problems so far. It was the weber. I couldn't imagine it in a 4-wheeler frame. The 550 is still the fuji right? later.

ktm had nothing to do with it.  KTM and polaris aren't the best of friends right now.

Most of the engine development was done right in Polaris's shop.

The only thing steering me away from this machine is weight, I want to see what it actually is on a scale full of fuel ready to ride, an how that number compares to the can am.

Here is why from a distance I like the popo more than the Can Am.  The can am just now started putting skid protection and it does not look that sturdy which I would not trust because of the flat frame can not take direct hits from a rock or stump.  The frame is weak and needs to be shored up.  The light weight with all of that power makes it really want to jump up in the front unless you are on a Max.  You need to upgrade the front shocks.  Not to mention the price is high considering the shocks, and skids needed. The 4x4 system is superior to Can Am.  And the Lock in Ride is awesome.  Other than that, The Can am is Awesome.  Great Ride.  I have researched the **** out of Can Am.  If Popo did not come out with this, I would have gotten a Razr.  I would like to see a 2-up though.

None of the big bores are real light, The japanese models are lighter, but once you get decent tires and rims on them, they gain quite a bit of weight too. That said I am sure without a doubt the Polaris will be one of the heaviest if not the heaviest bog bore out there. But they will all hurt if they roll over on top of ya, best to try and keep the shinny side up on any of them. LOL

I am sure this polaris will be a top contender this year for best big bore on the market. If given a choice of what is out there on the lots today, I would have to say Can-am all the way. The jury is still out on the new 850 IMO till they hit the showrooms and start making it out into the publics hands. So far on paper the 850 is a pretty darn impressive machine. Can't wait to try one out later this year.
