mines an 00 with the poweraide TB spacer, underdrive pulleys, NKG ignition and wires, true dual straights w/ cats. I have a question and a slight problem.

Question:
Is it hard to switch to elec fans? how expensive?

Problem:
My truck ran hot a few weeks ago cause I have a slight leak that I cant seem to find. And that might have nothing to do with it, but seems like since then, when I crank it up cold, it has a terrible knock on the drivers side of the motor. Sometimes it will last about 10-15 secs, but sometimes it wont stop till its at 185* for a few min(new 185* thermostat). You can even hear the difference in the exhaust from drivers side to passenger side.

I've taken it to the shop for the leak and they pressure tested it and didn't find anything, said it may be my water pump.

Talked to a friend that works at the shop about the knock and they seem to think it could be a lifter. I thought these had self adjusting rocker arms.

Just need some advise/info on what I need to do. If anyone has any insight...

Thanks,
sorry for a long post

Its mostly likely the chevy tic that these gen 3 chevy engines have.  Its nothing to worry about unless its very loud which then you could have a collapses lifter/valve.

yeah, its LOUD. I know about the slight "tick" from chevy's but this is alot louder. I've talked to a bunch of people about it and they say,"oh, its a chevy they do that" but this is louder than the reg. tap. Had a couple people say when they got their 02 brand new it had a tap. I know about it, but this isn't right, its really loud.

If its a "collapsed" lifter or valve, how hard is it to replace/fix? I'm thinkin about doing it this weekend.

Other option is let the shop tear into it and see @ $75/hr labor...

The common "tick" these LS motors have is referred to as Piston Slap... It is caused by the piston being SLIGHTLY smaller than the cylinder I think.
Some say synthetic helps it but Im not about to try to find out.
Nothing to worry about tho,
Bunk650 I bet yours is more than piston slap if its that loud.

I dont mean to come off as a jerk but a 5.3 is not in the LS series of motors, its a Generation 3 small block, and physically from the outside they are identical with the exception of oil pan and intake manifold. The 5.3's RPO is actually LM7 for just the regular 5.3, the flex fuel, AFM, and all aluminum 5.3's have different RPO's

I think that the electric fans are good upgrade IMO. it varies from where you get it, but you can pick them up for like 400 to 500 dollars, and they come with everything you need, you can also run a low temp thermostat and set the fans to come on sooner. I believe that in '04 maybe '05 some Tahoe's and Suburban's came with electric fans so it wont be too bad to switch to them. Idk how far you want to go with your mods but with the electric fans you can run a low profile LS1 or LS6 intake mainfold, the only thing you gotta watch out for is the water cross over lines depeding on the year, and get the throttle body ported. Another mod you can do is run a LS6 cam its not a real radical cam and wont affect it driveability, and if you do the cam, while your there you can also get a higher flow and higher pressure oil pump, and double roller timing chain, and if you want to do somethin with the MAF you could possibly get get an SLP or GMS (I personnally prefer the SLP) which has a larger diameter and is descreened. You can do this if you want idc but it will be a pretty nice setup with all the other mods that have been listed. Im in the process of doin the same thing but ive got an actuall LS1 and I had the heads ported, and Im gonna run a Comp cam tho, Scat rods and Mahle flat top pistons, plus whole lot of other crap thats going into that engine.

yeah, talked to some more guys today and they said they worked on a tahoe that had a prob similar to mine, but not as bad. they said it was a bad seal in the oil pump and a few bad valves/lifters.

So, I think Im gonna let them have it first of next week. Should I go ahead and get the higher flow/pressure oil pump? prolly gonna have to get a few new valves/lifters I guess. not sure yet....

the E-fans are easy.  Go to performancetrucks.net and search.  Go get a set of fans from an f body in a junkyard and then put the correct pin into your harness and have it programed in.  You can also get a fan from an 05 truck out of the junkyard.  I got mine for 30 bucks.

Thats up to you if you want to get the high flow/pressure oil pump, another alternative is an oil pump out of a corvette, it flows more than the truck oil pump.

the 5.3l is often referred to as an LS series motor.  You can ver EASILY turn it into the exact motor except iron instead of aluminum with just boring.

Now whoever said you are NOT about to try synthetic in the gen 3 small block.  YOU SHOULD already be running synthetic in it!  These motors love fully synthetic.

Efans are great cost effective upgrade.

I just cant see myself spending $50+ for a oil change, right now Im running Pennzoil or Vavoline and the oil change is $40.

I know it would be cheaper if I did it myself but I really dont feel like it.

E-fans will probably be one of my nexts mods, definitely before next summer.

i know on fords theres a choke behind the safewall were the stock air intake goes..  its put there for insurance and warranty resons.. it restricts air and takes away about 3 to 4 mpg.. take that out if urs has one.. put a cold air intake, a chip, flowmasters, might could change the gearing some, and everything u mentioned and u should be doing pretty good as far as gas milage

I had an older Dodge truck years ago and the oil pump went out on it. I got to talking to a hot rod buddy of mine at work and he convinced me to put a high volume/pressure pump on it. So I bought the pump and had a professional install it for me. Just a few miles later, I burnt the motor up. Apparantly, the high volume/pressure pump was too much for my motor and blew the seals out of it. Atleast that's what the mechanic told me. They told me that the high flow pump was a big mistake, that they were made for hot rod motors, not stock truck motors. Maybe and hopefully you won't have the same results as I did but I will never do that again.

well thats a Ford thing, the only somewhat-obstruction this thing has in the air intake tract is the huge silencer (soon to be removed) and the MAF sensor screen (not messing with it).

Im not getting a CAI, the factory airbox on these trucks is sufficent, as is the factory type filter, however I plan to add either a ram air type deal (home made) or just swiss the box.

A "chip", assuming your referring to a PCM has already been done to it, helped a good bit.

"Flowmasters" (plural), are not needed as these engines need backpressure to retain low end torque... a SI/DO is more common and Im not absolutely crazy about the flowmasters sound.  Ill stick with my magnaflow w/no pipes behind it.

Im running stock size tires for now, with 3.73 gears so Im right where I need to be there.  If I go bigger (285/40/20) I might consider 4.10's if my G80 decides to let go.

My LT1 EFans cost me $80..
No way i would pay 400-500 for Electric fans, thats crazy!

The tahoes and burbs have the 34" radiator... so your goin to need it to run those fans.. most trucks have the smaller 28" radiator like mine.
The Aftermarket MAF is a waste of $$, you could go Speed Density tuned and ditch the MAF, just get a IAT Sensor and wire it in. Weight Reduction is what i call it  . Dont need no silly MAF..

You could just live with the "Tick" and save up for another engine? haha It would be funner!
You can get 5.3s for fairly cheap, and if you wanted to you could do a subtle heads/cam setup before you do the swap?
Just throwing ideas out there.

Did we just have somebody else say "CHIP"?? OH my!!

My 5.3 was ticking extremely loud, i just drove it.. I even tried to blow it up but it didnt work.. It was making some strange noises and throwing all kinds of Knock Retard at strange times.

A 2004 LQ4 sovled alot of problems and created more like rear tires wearing extremely fast, broken transmissions.. ya know the fun stuff?

How much does it help to take out the screen at the MAF sensor? What do ya'll think about a Diablosport Predator programmer? By the way I have a 05' z71.

It doesnt do anything to descreen the MAF.. most of the times it just turns into a problem..

Get a custom tune and dont worry about the Handheld..

I thought to get a custom tune I'd have to have a programmer anyways. Are ya'll getting the stock computer tuned?

I say dont touch the MAF... instead of restricting air like most think it does, the screen actually evens the airflow out.  with it removed the airflow may get screwed up.

Just what I heard.

I thought to get a custom tune I'd have to have a programmer anyways. Are ya'll getting the stock computer tuned?

NO NO NO

The programmer flashes  the exact same as the Custom tune..

All you have to do is send Justin@blackbearperformance.com a email and he will send you a PCM thats already tuned and you just swap the PCM out of the truck and VOLA!!!

How much does it help to take out the screen at the MAF sensor? What do ya'll think about a Diablosport Predator programmer? By the way I have a 05' z71.

I say dont touch the MAF... instead of restricting air like most think it does, the screen actually evens the airflow out.  with it removed the airflow may get screwed up.

Just what I heard.

The screen "Straightens"  the air out so that its more consistant reading over the sensors..
