NO REAR WORK LIGHTS/REVERSE LIGHTS?? WHAT A LET DOWN!!!

Over all I like the bike, including the looks, but not having the reverse lights is going to bug me! Why have to add them later as aftermarket when we're are spoiled to having them as stock equipment?

TEXMudder, I had an "06" Sportsman 800 and had a few problems with the amount of heat produced from the exhaust pipe.  Melted plastic, and seat etc... I went through Jet hot, got the new heat shield and at the end of the day the plastic and seat never melted again, but the amount of heat shooting against my right leag was not fun while trail ridding.

Do you forsee excessive amount of heat and melting issues anywhere on the new 850.  I guess I was scarred from my experience and hope to avoid it on my next purchase if possible...

Looks like a beast to me.  Polaris seems to be going in the right direction these days.  They've drawn on improvements other manufacturers have incorporated and have made them better (hopefully).  Honda's engine orientation, Yami's EPS, a frontend like everybody else, AC's ground clearance, etc.  I LOVE the new firing order.  It shouldn't sound like a weedeater anymore and will definitely be better balanced!  Only things that look not so good are the intakes and the dreaded SPIKE LOAD DAMPENER!!!  How long will it be before somebody figures out how to lock that baby up...

I read somewhere that low gear wasn't as low providing more top speed in low range...how did it feel? Does the extra horsepower make up for the difference? Does it have the torque that we are all looking for?

That is correct.  Low gear is much higher than previous year models.  It was more like the japanese bikes in low range.  Will be great for racing as that is what gives the Can Ams and such the advantage.  I personally dont like it much, but I dont race.  It does turn big tires with ease though.

You know, I really didnt look at that.  Having Jet Hot on mine which fixed the problem made me not remember the problem...

did 850 sound any better than the  previous 800 motor?

Yes the sound is nice.  Almost like a v-twin.

Did anone at the ride and drive ask if 12" rims would still fit on the machine.

Also there is a pic of a different wheel laying in the grass. What was that pic of, is that on optional rim for the quads.

If memory serves, 12s will not fit on it.  The brakes are much larger and due to the offset needed they will not fit.  Yes that was just another wheel option laying there.

Did you get a chance to ride the 550 at all?  Any comments on the power and feel (vibration?)?  Is the weight too much for that engine?
Thanks.

I would bet at 40hp that the 550 pulls that new chassis around better than the old 500 pulled the old chassis around. I road a older 500 X2 a month or 2 ago, it was no power house, but got around just fine.

looks like the took an inline four car engine and cut off the #1 and #4 cylinders then pulled a honda and transvers mounted it. does this mean its a direct drive into the tranny as the front is from front to back. since that couldnt be from side to side. as the older engines. if polaris did there homework on this and alot of R&D to bring it on top of the ATV market. then congrads for polaris, i like it as its something diffrent. and looks kinda high tech. now the Q is who builds the engine, Its got to be some one like KTM or ?...

Yes rode the 550 as well.  More power than the 500, but no where near the power of the 850.

I think, this 850 will be a good seller for polaris, and that coming from me is alot. since im a die hard kawie v-twin owner, wont trade it if i had too.lol
some thing about v-twins and the power they make. now  I read power steering also, so its going after alot of diffrent machines at once. the yamaha griz, for the Power steering, the big bore machines like can-am and AC. the cylinder setup is sportbike technoligy, cylinders part of upper case and plated. they will last a life time, unless some one sucks in alot of water and junk.  i like to see a 12 min belt change. if its that easy then one up for popo. honda style engine mounting, here a think to ask.
does it come in dark green. and whats the wt of it. is it lighter then the older machines. is it much closer to the american built Jap machines. yes the honda machines made in GA, some suzuki atvs are from FL and GA, i dont know about yam, or kaw. but i seen the suzuki and honda plants. i like to see this 850 near 600 lbs. but no more then 675 lbs.  dont tell me its 700 plus.

PoPo has their name on it.  They have some serious ties with Fuji and Liberty and have used them in the past for engines.  If I'm not mistaken, their past twins are Liberties.

Prices are 9K without power steering 9.6K with Power steering.

IMO the prices are very competative. It has 3 more hp, power steering and few other perks, and cost over 2 grand less than the new 09 Thunder cat, prices seem more inline with Can-am.

I heard this 850 inline twin was built by Weber Motors.  They make most(if not all) the watercraft and sled engines.  They also make engines for Benz.   I think they just design the engine and Polaris actually mass produces them.  Pretty cool to have a German designed engine.  woot

Fuji has a pretty strong deal with Polaris and I believe Fuji owns a small portion of the Polaris stock.

The 850 engine is completely designed in house at Polaris.
speedy, in case youhadn't heard the 850 is about 784 lbs, I believe.   Still not a light bike, but with the power steering and power, it will handle like a lighter bike.
