Hi ATV people, I have a BB400 IRS and am looking for some tire advice.  I want to switch my stock Mudlites (terrible wearing tire, only 150km and 5 ripped lugs) to a realitively light, long wearing, smoother riding 25" bedrock/mud/snow tire.  So far I've narrowed it down to XTR's, 589's, Bighorn's and Mudgears, and am leaning towards the Mudgears.

Has anyone had any experience with these tires?

I love my MST's on my Vinson and Teryx. Way better traction than stock tires, good ride. I do not do mud, mostly work and trails and rocks. Love them.

The 'M' and 'S' mean mud and snow in the MST name. the 'T' is for trial. There's your tire!!!

msts are great tires..but they totally lack one of the traits you are looking for. Weight. they are pretty heavy,but they never wear out. the xtrs i think will not wear good either,they seem to wear kinda like the mudlites from what i have seen. the 589s look like a good tire,but i would be skeptical on any itp tire as far as lasting a long time,but they all ride smooth. like i say if weight isnt that big an issue go with msts.

First off, thanks for the responses.  I thought about MST's, but have read a few times that they are hard on ur machine and ride ruffer than most tires (but I do keep my ATV under 35 mph if that matters) so I ruled them out.  I also have no mods, and use my BB400 mainly for towing a boat in and out of backwater lakes.  If these are good tires for me, would I have to modify anything?

No, they are not heavy and no they are not rough on your ATV. The MST rides big time smooth. Bad info sometimes gets out by un-informed people or by other issues such as less than 1% of people having out of round tires caused by overloaded containers. Those handful of people then think the MST rides rough. Nothing could be further from the truth. I also will tell you they more than likely are lighter than any of the tires you are asking about, or so close to their weights, it does not matter. You ruling them out based on in-correct info is why I am telling you this. Also the MST has more overall benefits found in one tire than any of the others you mention. More especially for northern riders can benefit from some of these quality features. Search and read what sawhead, Mudcon, freetrapper, vt04grizz, Crkaminer, Chevync20, GreatWhiteNorth, Ruttratt, j2k_33, dbmachine, Polaris 425 and a ton of other report. Some of these MST users give long, in-depth factual test information that will amaze you with their detail reporting. It is what it is, and the MST is a great, true and honest all terrain tire. With all the reports I am telling you about to read, a lawyer would say "that the abundance of written evidence by so many experienced MST users would cause a reasonable person to say it should be the truth, based on so much factual reporting".

bushhog,i am just reporting what the tires did on my brand new brute force 750. correct air pressure and mounting on a new machine and getting over 35 miles an hour was unsafe.end of story. but i got your pm and and agree that maybe i got a out of round set,but nevertheless it happened. i still the the mst is a great tire,and like i said in this thread or another,i will buy another set with hopefully better luck.

Well if you take serious mud out of the picture then I highly recomend the Bighorns.   Their tread design does not lead to sever trenching in the snow we get up north such as Manitoba.  They are one of the best hardpack and rock tires available and wear like no other.    Not a real good sever mud tire though.  

You can't really have the best of both worlds when it comes to extreme mud and snow.

Brushhog recomends the MSTs which have a very similar traction design to the Maxxis Zillas other then they have some thin bars inside the thread sections to add more biting edges for hardpack running.

I have actually found Mudbuggs to be a pretty fair tire for these conditions also.   I ride alot of snow and they are not so agressive that they trench out like other tires and they offer pretty good traction on hardpack as long as you do try to over inflate them to make them bigger then what they are. Plus they do a pretty fair job in the wet stuff.

Just read some MST reviews and they seem pretty much exactly what I'm looking for.  So it's down to Bighorns or MST's.  Now for my last question:   bias-belted or radials under heavy load (more than fully loaded racks/hitch wieght), which one would perform/hold up better?  I thought radials would be better...

im interested to hear your opinion on the msts if you get them...to see how diff it is than mine. i couldnt tell you what best for a load tho,my msts seem fine loaded down tho.

i live in ontario and do the same type of stuff as you and i have had many different tires and i would recomend mud bugs or the 589s both very good tires for the conditions

bushhog sold me mst's and i love them, i run 26 12 12 on all four corners and they steer better than my skinny kendas, i have had them on trail, water and rocks a little mud but not as one would say peanut butter.  The mst's rock.

It depends on sidewall strength and overall tire pound carrying capacity. The MST has a flat radial type profile, the Big Horns are radials. Both would carry a heavy load the same. The MST is far better in the mud and for getting out of ruts. Other than that their overall performance is about the same. The MST costs less and weighs less. Even though the Big Horn is a great tire, one which I really like, for you, it has no major advantages.

hey mudfreak, im thinking about the 26x12x12 too..i got an 08' brute, and i want those demensions, but i dont feel like getting spacers..do you have spacers? ..and like i say in almost every tire post, and kawi post, listen to BUSHHOG, he is a great asset to this forum, and he's extremely knowledgable

no spacers they are mounted on itp steel black wheels and they clear fine, they run about a inch narrow that is why i went with 26 12 12 all four, they are some great tires, true to the height they are 26.25 tall with 5 lbs in it.  they weigh in at 30 lbs average.  great tires in my opinion, but not for lots of mud.

Alright, I guess that settles it then.  I will replace my Mudlite' this fall (if they make it that long) with a set of MST's.
I also have to say that this website is awesome  -  lots of info and helpful people.  Thanks again everyone for your help.
