When you use the piece of flat bar you have to use a bolt on each end to compress the metal ring. I felt safer using the endcap

even if i welded the flat bar to it? wouldnt that eliminate the need for the nut? it looks like the tool they sell is welded... and seems like I've seen other peoples home-made that way...

Im with everyone else on the impact - I know you said you dont have one but if you can barrow one from somebody it would be a lot easier if not take a ratchet strap and wrap around the primary then ratchet it to your rack make sure its pulling against the way you are trying to turn (obviously) then use a 19mm ratchet with an ext and snatch it real quick. You will probably have to work at a few times to get it to bust loose. I've had to do it this way in the past when no impact was available.
Good luck! and let us know your outcome!!

A nut would be much easier. Also with the tool made outta flat bar you have to have to bolts with two nuts on each to go on the ends to compress it. just go to the supply store and get what I said that the beginning. Much cheaper and much easier

JD bro, the piece of angle iron would work perfectly on the end.

Mine is similar to that . Instead of bolts I just cut two pieces of flat bar about 1" long and welded them in place .

You could put a piece of angleiron on the ends of that instead of the flat bar or bolts and it would spread the load more evenly over the metal plate to compress it

That's why I used flat bar instead of bolts. Way more stable than balancing it on the ends of the bolts. Just make sure they are squared up before you weld them.

Yeah I bet so. I was thinking make it like this:   <-->   That way the angle would stabilize it better. I am using one tool with a PVC endcap and one with a Metal endcap. Both work great. It just depends on which I can find easiest

ok never mind thats too much trouble... going w/ the PVC cap b/c thats what I have tools to cut a hole in. Otherwise Im going to have to go borrow something to cut a steel one.

Yeah the angle iron clamps in the vice. If you dont cut the "U" in the side of the endcap too big it will be fine. If it tries to spread open then put a ziptie or a pipe clamp around it. Make sure that your circlip pliars open far enough to get the clip off. Mine didnt and I ended up using a screwdriver to help it along

so these 2" caps are going down over something, thats why there's a need for the hole to get the clip out, but that ring on the other end of the one I pictured apears as if it would just rest on top? I guess thats why I dont understand why something similar i.e. flat bar, wouldnt work on the other end of the home-made one as well??

Or, does that ring on that one go down over the deal, and the space above it is where you take the clip out? I think I see that now...

I put a band clamp around the bottom of my PVC cap on mine to keep the bottom from speading out when I got close to the bottom. It worked great. I can post a pic up tonight if anyone needs a visual of what I'm talking about.

i built mine just like this, but instead of the metal cap, i measured out and cut a piece of angle iron and put the angle iron where the metal cap is on the one in the pic, i tryed the caps, but it just dident work out for me real good.......i think a piece of angle iron on each end is the way to go..i will have a piece on each end next time...just my 2 cents

i made one here. i used a steel pipe cap. scared the pvc one would break under all the pressure from a big spring like a red

Bruteforman - i agree with you. the top circle on top of the spring at times seems to slide off the cap to one side. Having the angle, as you state, would eliminate this.

As far as the primary puller goes, we have a metal lathe and are going to be fabricating a few of these. Should be pretty easy to mimic.
Might have a few to get rid of soon.
