Personally, i like the new bike! the look and style is great! Looks like everything is molded together (racks mold to the plastic). Everyone is going to 14" wheels anyway. Can't wait to see one in person.

Why Are they going to A-Arms now?? I thought Polaris was all about the struts??-Chris

So this doesn't make sense to me, Kawi and Yamaha have always had A-arms and rode like crap compared to polaris with struts... And the kawi's steering was horrible, so whats polaris got differnt than the rest to make them ride/handle better "with A-Arms"??? Polaris has had the smoothest ridding quads,, Just don't know why they would make a huge change like that!! Oh well, guess it must be for the better somehow or they wouldn't of done it!!-Chris

Well the polaris system includes bump steer and rolled IRS, that alone should set it apart

Wornder if anything was said at the show about Quad?

Probly nothing at the show but I am sure there is some discussion going on at headquarters.

As far as the new machines,   Well it will take some getting used to I quess.   The looks are a love/hate thing. Either you love them or you hate them.   I fall into the later catagory on this.

I have always been lookign forward to either an big update on the fron awd system or them going back to the old design but that is not in the cards at Polaris.

I would love to see an update on the carb models but that is not going to happen any time soon either.

The 14 inch wheels have me at odds also.   It sure takes away the tire options unless you have deep pockets.   Going with spacers and 12 inch wheels is not an option either in alot of cases due to extra width and narrow trails.      I am wondering if the aftermarket offset 12 inch wheels might work, give enough clearance for the suspension parts and brake parts?

I am also one of the guys that perfers 12 inch wheels.   Much better protection for the rims in technical riding such as rocks and logs, they also offer more sidewall flex of the tires which gives you better traction in these types of conditions.   Smoother riding at normal trail speeds with alot of rocks etc in the trails.   Got to remember that tires are part of the suspension and they soak up alot of stuff.

Maint of the CVt system is not going to be so much fun anymore with the clutches mounted at the back of the motor under the seat.      I sure hope they made the CVT system alot more waterproof for creek crossings.   I have not viewed the cover for the CVt system personally but if it is plastic then that is going to be an issue also as we all know how the plastic covers can warp from heat and not stay sealed.

The 850 par twin is not an issue for me.   It is a good design and the 800 and 700s were smooth running torque monsters.

Still not sure about the low mounted fuel tank for deeper water crossings.   Might be great for lower CG and handling but the risk is greater for water contamination into the fuel system in rack deep water.

I can only hope the extra weight means a more durable chassis. Not saying the old chassis was not durable but this is a new chassis so it is still up in the air.

Now the final gearing for low range.   Not sure if they mean a higher numerical ratio or higher gearing for higher speeds in low range.   If they mean higher low range speeds (lower numerical ratio) then I am not keen on this idea either unless they did something real drastic with the CVT system to keep slippage to a minimum which creates alot more heat inthe CVT system.

The optional powersteering may be nice for the girls but I can do without it.

The top mounted airbox (were the fuel tank used to be) has me wondering also.   It all depends on how the intake snorkle is setup.  If it scoops air from the front like the brutes etc then this may be an issue.   After sitting knee deep in a water hole trying to get a brute back up and running because a bow wave sent water straight into its airbox which sent water into the carbs at 3 AM, not to keen on that design either.

So the jury is still out till I can get some seat time on one in the real world of redneck atving.

Is the new 850 engine a completely redesigned engine or a modified version of the old 800twin?  Cause we all know the old parellel twin has definetly proved its durability!

Redneck atving?

Well, the fist time I rode with a POPO engineer he was scraching his head at my machine with its snorkles etc. Then he just about dropped his shorts when he see what some of us do with these machines.

They did not design them to go in water deeper then the center of the wheel. LOL.

Low range has me wondering as well; I could care less how fast they go, I want pulling power without belt slipping/smoking/breaking.

Now the best for last................Let's see what Honda does in Sept.  They better step up or people will be buying these polaris machines; myself included.

The new models have 12" of GC too including rangers, thats good im tired of hearing the AC people go on and on about their stock ground clearance. They all look like they should fit a 29.5 with no lift too.

It's a completely new engine, ground up.
The plastics are not molded to the racks, they are similar to the current style.  The front has little tiny pocket for storage, but they aren't really practical.  The rear box is about the same, but it gets hot since it's right above the exhaust.
The exhaust on these things get's pretty hot too.  They have some shielding there otherwise it would be bad.
The seat is narrower between the knees, which should be good for most people.  Where your butt sits is still wide though.
The frame is actually lighter than the old frame.  It's made from round tube rather than the old square tubing.  A lot of interesting bracing and manufacturing methods have gone into the new frame.
It's an incredibly tight package, especially in the middle.  There's not a lot of room for extra stuff.  I'm concerned about snorkeling the clutch in a way which will hide the hoses, but I'm sure someone will figure out how to do it when they get a bike in front of them.
As for the suspensions, I believe Polaris puts a lot more time, testing, and effort into this than anyone else.  Everyone else puts effort into engine power, torque, styling, random features like a tool holder molded into the plastic (saw that on a kawi once) and less effort into the ride quality.  Maybe they figure they'll never match Polaris, so why even try?
Struts have less that you can do with them when designing a suspension.  They go up and down in a stright line with the only control for camber and caster being the lower control arm.  With dual a-arms you can control these much better not only at the initial point but throughout the entire travel of the suspension.  Neither one is inherently better than the other.  In fact, it's easier to screw up the ride with dual a-arms than with struts, because struts can't be changed much.  The reason that Polaris ride so much better isn't because of the type of suspension, but because they took the suspension and deigned it right.  The suspension engineers at Polaris are just incredibly good at their job.

If you do not believe us, look at the picture of the motor on the Polaris website. See it with your own eyes. Years ago when the first Polaris twin came out the magazines were mistakenly calling it a V-twin. When in fact it was not Vs they were Ps, same thing has happened again. Not only did Quad magazine spill the beans a couple days early, they got it wrong and said it was a V-twin.

No offense to anyone, my source is closer to the bike than yours.
The engine is a parallel twin, but it's slanted in the bike about 15 degrees off vertical.  If someone were to look at the right side quickly and see the angle it's at, they might think they are seeing one side of a V-Twin.

It's a parallel twin.
