rrouse4761 -> needs a new clutch already??? (7/22/2008 5:20:46 PM)

Hey guys, got my ATV at the shop and i was complaining about smoking the belt and it slipping when taking off.  Well, they call and tell me i need the clutch assembly,(primary i assume but am not sure) that it is shot.  Told me if i put another belt on it that it would just eat up that belt also.  What gives?  Anyone had to replace a clutch yet?  Warranty won't cover it because of oversized tires and they said the clutch was $800!!!!!!!   Does this make sense to anyone up here?  I mean, i have the EPI clutch kit in it and i smelled the belt burning.  So shouldn't the belt smoke before the clutch goes?  I always thought the belt was the weak link so to speak???  It's only had one other belt put on it and i have maybe 600 miles on the unit!!!  Anyone's insight would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks guys!!!!

find another dealer thats BS where are you located? several people have issues with the one way bearing and friction washer needing to be greased what is it doing exactly ? making noise reeping in gear ? totaly buring up belts ?

First off, unlesss U race in the mud, remove the EPI kit, ( at least the red secoundary spring ). Next, if the dealer is talking about the grovve low down the primary sheeves, it won't effect the belt much. Almost all of the OL clutches have this groove. ( usually from water entering the CVT case and wearing it down ) If the dealer was nice, he would just replace the clutch, belt and anything else U need under the CVT inner guide warping.... ( cause this is probably what caused it in the first place ). NBM.

yep same things is up with mine it has trash in the clutch right now from a warped inner air guard ... i am fixing to go round and round with the dealer... i wish this bike was bought in gulfport

rrouse4761 -> RE: needs a new clutch already??? (7/22/2008 7:08:19 PM)

located in NC, next closest dealer is located 45 mins away, and guess what........it's owned by the same family.  No it's not tearing up belts, like i said, it is just slipping when taking off a little.  I don't see what is in the clutch to mess up like that for $800?  The dealer put a new inner cover on it but said that BRP denied the clutch and belt due to my modifications.....dealer said if i didn't replace the clutch it would continue to burn up belts.  So i need to remove both the EPI clutch springs?  Oh and get this, i have called BRP probably 20 time in the past 3 weeks trying to **** about why it's not covered and the rep. up there will not return my phone calls or emails.  Isn't that just great customer service???

Take your mud tires off and put stockers back on and drive it to another dealer.  Even if its over an hour away and it costs you more in fuel, you will save money comparred to the 800 its gonna cost you at your local dealer.

matprice -> RE: needs a new clutch already??? (7/22/2008 7:33:39 PM)

just take the red spring off leave your primary... and thats exactly what I would do put the stock tires on it and drive to another dealer you dont know anythign about it .... ask them to tell you EXACTLY whats wrong with it before they go fixing anything

X2!!!!!

rrouse4761 -> RE: needs a new clutch already??? (7/23/2008 5:59:42 AM)

i can't just take it to another dealer, BRP says that my VIN number is "flagged"  where i threatened to sue them over the lemon law like a year and a half ago, so the dealer now always has to call and get approval on my warranty work now.

well if you kept riding it after you smoked the belt and it kept slipping then you probably grooved your pulleys pretty bad. the glaze on the belt will make it slip and cause it to groove. the red spring is causing alot of those problems. the belt is not the weak link. dont bite my head off but i have a couple of questions.

what were you do when you smoke the belt the first time? how many times have you smoked the belt? how many miles did you put on it with a burnt belt?

on the other note. if you called canam a bunch and raise a red flag it is possible that they flagged your bike and are monitoring all work not only for your bike but that dealer. when stuff like that happens we as dealers have to watch our p's and q's for a few months so not to buck the system.

i would love to know which dealer you are talking about. send me a pm dont post. i know a couple out there and think i know whcih one you are talking about. which if it is they are stand up guys and probably would go with what they are saying. 800 is a good price if they are changing out the primary pulleys and a new belt. the pulley alone are around 900 retail and the belt 170 so they are trying to help you out some.

You forgot to mention that the last time you had it in the shop you had a inch of mud in the airbox, and all the homemade snorkels were cracked and leaking. And yes, it does need clutches but not from the airguide leaking.  It's not up to the dealer anymore once you try to sue BRP, and they get pictures of your lack of maintenance. Tell everyone about your air filter that cant even be cleaned anymore its so dirty, not to mention the qt of oil in the bottom of the air box this time. Service techs don't appreciate it when you have to scrape a 5 gallon bucket of mud off a bike just to read the vin. Don't get on here and talk junk about BRP or any dealer when everything that has happened to your bike is your fault. Warranty does not cover being stupid.

If you keep this thread up, I can supply pics.

matprice -> RE: needs a new clutch already??? (7/23/2008 5:38:05 PM)

whoaaaa now that sheds ALLL KINDS OF LIGHT on this thread... if thats true man... i dont blame these folks! my bike has to go in to a dealer i dont like to deal with this weekend and i still spent 5 hours sunday making sure every speck of dirt is gone so it wont fall in these guys eyes while working on it. dude if its true you had that muh mud in the airbox i agree with them your on your own... i can only imagine what was in the cvt cover... if this is true...

rancher12 -> RE: needs a new clutch already??? (7/23/2008 6:14:23 PM)

Not sure which dealer in NC this guy is referring to but...

The one I use in NC, which also has a sister store they own, has done nothing but take care of me and whoever else goes there.  They install snorkels, lifts and outlaw type tires.

I go to Performance East in G-boro, they are great!!!!

chrisgrizzly660 -> RE: needs a new clutch already??? (7/23/2008 6:22:39 PM)

OK it looks like someone has been called out  If its true about the mud in the air box lets see the pics [;)]

matprice -> RE: needs a new clutch already??? (7/23/2008 6:25:39 PM)

greenhead -> RE: needs a new clutch already??? (7/23/2008 7:16:48 PM)

i knew who it was and know the guys personally. just hate for a good dealer to get a bad rap for lack of maintenance

rrouse4761 -> RE: needs a new clutch already??? (7/24/2008 6:24:01 AM)

first of all, i'm not saying anything bad about the dealer or their work, just lack of care for customers from BRP's end.  Like i told the dealer, i may sell this unit but it is kind of frustrating when you try to call BRP for three weeks now and no one even cares to return your phone calls.  Like i said, i never said ANYTHING bad about the dealer or their work, never questioned the repair, just if anyone else had had this problem.  As for the oil in the airbox and filter, i explained when i was at the dealer that a mouse had stopped up my air intake from sitting in the barn over the winter months and when i cranked it and rode it, it sucked oil from the engine breather line, the only other place it could get air from.  I didn't ask for the air filter to be cleaned this time, i specifically told the dealer not to worry about it.  I will clean that myself if i get to go riding this summer.  You're right, warranty doesn't cover being stupid but when i have had trouble with this transmission since month 1, the least the reps at BRP could do would be to call me back and talk to me.  I'm not expecting them to cover the part but would like to express my concern to them about their customer care.  When i filed the lawsuit against BRP, i made absolutely sure that the dealer knew it was nothing against them or their service department.  Also, when i dropped the lawsuit, the customer rep at BRP assured me that if i dropped the case, the modifications i had made to my ATV WOULD NOT affect my warranty.  I wanted to ask her about this and also about the VIN being flagged.  So if you think i am bashing the dealer or their work, you are wrong.
