Thinking about buying a diesel but have no idea what brand. A friend has a super nice King Ranch that I love but not sure on the power of the fords. Gunna get some kind of 250 or 2500 but what do yall think. And do yall know of anyone who is selling one? ??????????????

If you can, find a used Dodge 5.9L C u MMins or a Ford 7.3L Powerstroke.  Those two are about the best diesel motors that were ever made.  I own a Dodge with the 5.9 and love it!  Has pulled anything that I ever have tried, and I've pulled some pretty big loads.

A lot of people are selling them because of fuel prices. Go to any decent dealership and look around.

Be leary of the first year 6.0s a lot of people reported problems with them. The people I know with them however have not had problems...

As for engine choice South B Grizz is correct, best deisel engines out there.

One other thing to keep in mind is the ford V10. That is what I have and I love my truck. Pulls very good and gets around 13mph unloaded/11 loaded (under 65mph). With the market so down rite now for diesels the gap between the V10 and diesel engine are pretty much break even because you don't get the great diesel resale anymore... And my most favorite thing about my V10 is I don't have to kill the engine at a drive up window!!

You should be able to get a used diesel real cheap right now.  People can't give them away, with the price of diesel fuel what it is.  Plan on spending $200 every time you fill the tank.  If you're ok with that, then now is the time to be buying one, because their resale value is at an all time low.

If you really think tho, most 03-07 diesels average 20+ mpg so you'll pay more at tha pump but go farther on the less money than a gasser (diesels are cheaper to drive per mile). Guess that's why diesels around here still have a resale value as strong as ever

Yep, I get about 22-24 MPG on the highway, but only about 13-15 MPG in town because I can't keep my foot out of it.[:)]

aight thanks for the input. i'm looking for an 03 and up diesel with less than 100 thousand miles. This might be a touchy question but which one do yall think is the best Ford GMC Dodge????

ford... 2003 7.3 ltr. best made IMO... or a 2006 and up 6.0 ltr.. very good motor..... if you want a dodge get the 5.9 24 valve cummins..... stay away from GM.... good motor for daily driving, sucks for towin....

The 7.3 is a great motor for towing, it just doesn't get the milage the newer motors do(around 17 at best out of most i've seen), the 5.9 is guna get low-mid 20s chipped and tow about the same. The newer 6.0s hold together better than the older ones if your a ford guy, and the duramax's don't pull as good as any of the above but get low 20s mpg bone stock and are fast a heck. All the 08s get crappy mileage bc of the emissions. All of 'em have there ups, down's, and lil quirks, it's mostly just preference. IMO

If I were not going to be using it for towing, there is no way in **** I would be buying a diesel these days.  You must like giving the gas station attendant half your paycheck each week.

well then get a full size pickup.

IMO, a 5.3 would be great for your use.

I tow a 5x14 trailer carrying atvs/lawn equipment quite often with my 2000 Sierra Z71 5.3 and I have never felt the need for a diesel.

well, except for getting on interstate.  [:'(]

this has been discussed on quite a few forums lately.

on the AVERAGE.................the 6.0's will net you some good milage if you don't get a lemon, chances are slim you'll get one, but when you get one, YOU GET ONE!!  7.3L are still the choice of quite a few, milage wise they are OK, reliability, guys say, they are top notch.  the 5.9 is a work horse, some say the 12valve pull better and handle more power than the 24valve, but the 24s get better milage.  and on a side note, you see/hear of people doing more 5.9L swaps into ford and chevy than the other way around.

the NEW NEW diesels, mainly the 6.4L is a killer on fuel.  the milage compared to the new V10's aren't off by only a couple miles.

personaly i love my V10 (F250 6.8L, headers, exhaust work, 9" lift, 39.5 IROKs, 4.56 gears, and trans upgrades).  and unloaded highway it sees between 13 and 14mpg.........pulling.........i don't care what you hook to it (golf cart or a backhoe) you get between 10-11mpg!  V10s are hard to come by, but you can deal on them about like the diesels now days..........

I have the 07 Classic Duramax and I couldn't ask for a better truck. imo It gets 16-17 avg., will haul some tail when the pedal is pushed, and have hauled some pretty heavy loads with ease. I just dont buy the over 20 mpg's on these new diesels. Maybe they are not calculating their mileage right. I cant see a 7500 lb wall of metal geting that, 16-17 is real good to me for a vehicle of this size and ability. Shoot my 2000 GMC 2wd didn't get that most of the time.
If you have a need or just money to play with go buy you a diesel, but you better have deep pockets, they are costly and addictive when it comes to power.

yes they are but man either go with a 7.3 or newer 6.0 dont crap around with the 03 to 04 6.0....... people havev had alot of trouble out of them... thats wy i drive a 01 7.3 best truck ive everhad.. and ive owned all three... dont get me wrong the dmaxs are freakin fast... but have trouble wit a trailer....

well i got a 05 dodge 2500 reg. cab 5.9 cummins and it has pulled anything i've hooked it to since i got it.  Best of all fuel mileage is real good as long as you keep it below 70.  the last time i filled up i got 23.2 mpg hand calculated so i have nothing to complain about except for the price of fuel.

Sorry honda man, but I'm going to have to disagree with you 100% with your comment about the dmaxs having trouble with a trailer.  Here's a picture of our 2005 dmax and the toy hauler it tows.  When the trailer's fuel station is full, the water tanks are full, and it has a long travel Rhino, two Grizzly 700s, and two dirt bikes in the back it weighs just over 17,000 lbs.  Yes, that is just over the trucks maximum rated towing capacity.  And the truck towed that load just fine.  I set the cruise control at 65 mph with that much weight in tow, and the truck maintains that speed, even on 6% mountain grades in the Rocky Mountains.  Our 2007 dmax tows the same trailer even better.  It maintains speed on the grades, never overheats, and has no problems at all.  It only gets 9 mpg towing that much weight, but that is better than the 6 to 8 mpg we got with a 2002 Dodge Cummins while towing the same trailer.

This is the type of use someone should buy a diesel for, not for just "driving around".  If you're buying a diesel for just driving around, you're throwing money away at the corner gas station every week.

Apparently you haven't towed with a Dmax or you would be saying that.  If you think a 7.3 will tow a load better than 6.6 LBZ, you are just being brand bias.  I do believe the cummins is the best diesel engine you get in a pick-up.  I don't like the wrapper, I'm not a big Dodge fan.

That's just maintenance.  Your keeping that black stuff from building up in your exhaust pipe.  That's my justification...[:D]

I have a "old" 96 crew cab psd, I dont care what the mileage is, and I dont care that it has 294k miles on it.  I wouldnt think twice to hop in and drive cross country.

My wifes diesel TDI beetle gets 40mpg though[:D]

BTW, I call bs on a v10 getting 10mpg towing anything heavier than a atv in the bed of it.

i towed my race truck and trailer with both truck slap full and a total weight of over 15K from north carolina to louisiana (when leaving the marines) and averaged 10-11mpg............and no i was not going over 65mph either.  i kept it around 65 the majority of the trip.  there are quite a few other that will tell you the same, check out some ford forums some time.

and if one of your friends has one that gets worse milage, let me ask you this, what year, what heads, what gears, what tire size, what trans...........that will make a difference!  your probably like most trained monkeys at the dealer that say a V10 is worthless and push people towads the diesels.........funny now, that diesel sales are in the tank, and V10 sales have just about doubled, but i'm sure stats don't mean anything to you either..............

it's seen the mud a few times, nothing like the race truck, but some pretty good mud.  it hauls what i want it to and gets what kind of milage you'd expect an aerodynamic bric to get!!
