dish soap won't harm the filter, its easier to clean if you use filter cleaning solution, but i use dish soap most of the time

I bought the filter cleaner and oil kit and just use that. But dish soap will not hurt it. Just make sure all the soap is rinsed out of the filter.

Can you wash them out with gas and let them dry?? Then re oil.

Just get a can of the filter cleaner like is recommended. It will be enough for several cleanings and will do the job right.  $10 isn't that much money.

to me it is.  lol I saved $20 by unmounting my tires today because every last dollar I had went into getting those tires.

My dad said I could clean the filter with kerosene but Ill use JOY or something.  [:D]

I was told gas would be ok.  Is this true?

Gas cost more than the cleaner.[:D]

clean it with kerosine, and then put some filter oil on it

if you're gonna use soap use dawn its the best in getting the oil off and the dirt will just follow. make sure you put some filter oil it after you got it clean and dry

The proper way to clean foam filters is to use a high flash point solvent first to clean out all the old oil and dirt. Kerosene/varsol/diesel/furnace oil is what to use. Then after you have done that, wash the filter in a mild soap and water detergent. Ley dry when finished.
But, you can also use gasoline. It will not harm the filter....which is a common mis-conception.
Gasoline, like oil, is a petroleum product.
Oil is used to make the filter more effective/ Gasoline is used to break down the oil top clean it.
Also, gasoline evaporates very fast and doesn't leave much residue, which means you do not have to wash it in soap/water solution.
Manufacturers do not tell you to use gas because of safety concerns, since gas is highly flammable. Which would surely lead to lawsuits if anything happened.
They tell you to use high flash point solvents (less flammable). Because of the nature of these solvents not evaporating very fast, and leaving a residue behind, the manufacturers then tell you to wash the filter in a soapy water solution directly after. The reason for this is becuase if any solvents are left behind, when the filter oil is re-applied to the filter, these solvents break down and thin the oil. This thined oil can be sucked out of the filter and into the engine. Thus leaving a filter with no oil.....reducing its effectiveness, and ultimately, engine failure.

I hope this little write up explains a few things...

is this ok to do.......1.clean the filter in kerosine....2. lay it out to dry........3.put foam filter oil on it...

Silveradols -> RE: cleaning filter?? (7/22/2008 4:37:02 PM)

I would use dawn/water solution to clean it, due to the safety issues when dealing with gas/kerosene.  Of course gas is an awful expensive filter cleaner too.  You don't have to use the UNI filter cleaner either.  Any foam filter cleaner will work.  I use the UNI filter cleaner and oil kit, just like I use the K&N cleaner and oil kit on my K&N filters.
