mattg -> Warn winch problem!!! (7/13/2008 10:36:07 AM)

I have a RT 2500 warn winch. I must have a loose wire or bad connection because sometimes it will not spool out but it always spools in. What wire do yall think I need to check? The winch is only two months old, but I did hook it up myself. That might be problem......lol

muddin450 -> RE: Warn winch problem!!! (7/13/2008 11:33:00 AM)

sounds like your contactor may be bad

elkbow -> RE: Warn winch problem!!! (7/13/2008 11:45:16 AM)

check all connections and even the switch

Jake450s -> RE: Warn winch problem!!! (7/13/2008 4:03:35 PM)

The tough thing here is it's tough to diagnose unless it's dead.

It sounds like a contactor, because the eight bolted wire connections will all have equal impact on both directions of winch operation.  The only thing it could be is a contactor or the little switch, or the two little wires to the switch from the contactor.

If I had to guess (and I don't guess, I tear my hair out until I can prove something) but If I had to guess I'd say "contactor", but not necessarily...

One good clue, to narrow it to what might be an acceptable margin of error-  When it acts up, does it give the "click" at the contactor but still not move the drum, or does the contactor remain dead silent when the drum fails to turn?

mattg -> RE: Warn winch problem!!! (7/14/2008 4:54:11 PM)

Remains silent

Jake450s -> RE: Warn winch problem!!! (7/14/2008 5:53:51 PM)

Oooh.  That would lean me more towards the switch and two little wires to the contactor...

Do you have a test light at your disposal?

mattg -> RE: Warn winch problem!!! (7/14/2008 6:41:11 PM)

I would have to find it. I hope that it is a bad connection.

Jake450s -> RE: Warn winch problem!!! (7/14/2008 7:54:44 PM)

With your light alligatored to the battery negative post, you'll have to investigate the little wires going to the contactor.  You should see B+ (indicated by a lit light) on one little wire when the switch is in the "in" position, the other little wire when the switch is in the "out" position, and neither when the switch is not being pressed.  Trouble is, you have to get it when it's acting up.  When it's working, it's working, therefore you're diagnostics are going to indicate that it's working...

mattg -> RE: Warn winch problem!!! (7/14/2008 8:02:18 PM)

I have the most trouble with it when I have had it winched down on my trailor for a little while. I try to release it and it acts up.[:@]

clemzexp6969 -> RE: Warn winch problem!!! (7/14/2008 8:49:05 PM)

i heard that using your winch to hold your atv on is bad news for the gears on them,  ive got a **** and my contactor is making the click noise and im on the third one.

mattg -> RE: Warn winch problem!!! (7/14/2008 9:00:47 PM)

Yea, I need to quit using it for a tie down. (quick & easy) is not always the best!
               Thanks clemzexp6969

little grasshopper -> RE: Warn winch problem!!! (7/14/2008 9:57:18 PM)

That shouldn't be a probelm with the Warn RT. It has a brake built inside to hold up to it's pull strength. I have tied mine down many times with no problem. Get out a test light and follow Jake's instructions.

mattg -> RE: Warn winch problem!!! (7/15/2008 3:47:08 PM)

Will do, thanks

Stop doing that immediately.  There's misinformation about this practice out there.  This does NOT wear out your winch, does not damage anything electrical, does NOT have anything to do with the brake (the brake makes it worse, not better, as there's no "release" at the motor.  It is NOT a "wearing out your winch" issue.  There's no amount of time for which it is safe.  A brand new winch is no better than a ten year old winch in this situation.
What this problem IS, is a "I've never had a problem doing this so I'm gonna keep doing this" kind of thing, then one day randomly, maybe tomorrow or maybe in five years, your winch assembly just instantly BLOWS THE **** UP and the bike goes sailing down the road without you.  Don't do it.

you feelin alright jake? havent seen ya get that worked up [8|]

but calm down man, if he wants to use it as a tie down let him, but one day he will learn and wish he listened to everyone.

what he is tlaking about is trying to save you from having to buy a new wheeler! they are not meant to hold loads, with or without brakes. they are used for extraction, not hoisting. read the box at least, it clearly says not for holding loads or hoisting.

now buy some $10 straps, grab a test light, and maybe a $15 solenoid kit and start checkin stuff out.

sounds to me like it is in the thumb switch but yet again, i had a **** #3000 that did the same thing and turned out to be solenoid.

so a $15 ebay kit that includes both cured my problem and im a happy camper. so kick back and calm down.

No, not worked up, but very concerned.

The winch tie down has been discussed for a long time, there's always a new way to rationalize and justify it.  The brake thing (mentioned above) is the latest, most widely heard one I've come across, when in fact it's just plain backwards thinking.

Yes, I'm concerned that someone will loose an ATV.  Perhaps someone who can afford to replace it, perhaps someone who had insurance and won't have any worries, but then again, what does that mean really?  What happens when the ATV comes off of the trailer and takes the entire right front suspension out from under the mini-van behind you with a family of six riding in it?  Or through the windshield.  I don't know how many of you realize how high an ATV can be if they land a little crooked, before it settles into a barrel roll, but at 40 mph the windshield of a Kenworth is not out of the question.  Maybe its not so terrible as that, and just pulverizes one kid on the side of the road who happened to be riding his bicycle at the wrong place and time.   There's more consequences here than a broken winch or ATV.

mattg -> RE: Warn winch problem!!! (7/16/2008 8:45:17 PM)

I did not think it was that dangerous. I will not use it like that any more.
Jake450s, I took what you said all wrong, I did not know why you were so upset, because I knew I did not do any thing to offen you. [:)]

1badsierra -> RE: Warn winch problem!!! (7/16/2008 10:45:35 PM)

a friend of mine used his as a (tiedown) all the time and he is about to send his off tomorrow to Warn.  His makes a hella noise when retreiving

that would be the gears slipping and grinding from havin stress on them for long periods

Stress for long periods is fine.  Mine's been hanging from the basement ceiling for darned near a week and a half...  It's steady and consistant, that's what a winch is good at.  How a bout "beaten to crap with a 600 pound sledgehammer for possibly hours at a time...[;)]  Shockloads, even light ones are what gets them.  These winches are stronger in a lot of ways as the tie downs I would recommend to you , but they are brittle  Like a glass soda bottle.  Put it on the lawn so that you can apply a force slowly and gently, and you can drive a car on it.  But on the other hand, drop that bottle from just a couple of feet onto concrete, and it shatters...    Usually using the winch as a tie-down results (eventually) in a complete catastrophic instantly released geartrain (if not a full fledged blowing up of the gearcase).  It prolly could happen to just a tooth or two, but not when I've seen it.  Noisy winches are usually the result of worn gears and bushings from dirt and such.

let_it_be_known -> RE: Warn winch problem!!! (7/23/2008 11:22:57 AM)

you really are getting into a tight discussion about this "using my winch for a tie down" scenario. if you are going to use it to tie the front atleast put a strap on the back of the quad pulling forward. i always run 2 straps no matter what..just in case

1bigforeman -> RE: Warn winch problem!!! (7/23/2008 11:43:45 AM)

I don't have a winch on mine yet but I had a warn on my foreman. Best bet is to not use it to hold down your bike. I did one time on my brute had a front strap that broke and luckily I was going slow through a small neighborhood and didn't kill anyone. This could've been avoided if I had my strap holding the front and the winch hooked up but not tight just as a backup. You are using the winch as the only means of holding your bike down when it should be your secondary means. When you think you have enough straps holding it down, add another one. People think I go overboard with strapping my bike, but I lost my bike twice. [;)]

This could be avoided if the straps were used correctly, then misusing the winch would not be an issue.[;)]

Thanks for the info. but I guess they were used correctly...that's why it broke and not came lose. [;)]
