This could've been avoided if I had my strap holding the front and the winch hooked up but not tight just as a backup.

This could be avoided if the straps were used correctly, then misusing the winch would not be an issue.

Thanks for the info. but I guess they were used correctly...that's why it broke and not came lose.

If it was frayed, worn, damaged, defective, or otherwise deficient in any way, or if it was rated for less than what you asked of it, then installing it all was using it incorrectly.  Straps don't "just break".  What kind of strap was it?

It was the good ratchet-type strap from O'Reily's Auto and I also had a 2 X 12 across the back of the trailer which it broke in half on the way out. I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to figure out a strap or that one needs to be thrown away because it is torn.  Come to think of it, do you think the 2 X 12 broke because it wasn't treated wood?

I agree with everyone on NOT using the winch for a tie down, but that ain't what I chimed in about.  On ebay they sell several different sets (4 in a pack) of 2" straps for around $50 with shippin'.  The straps are rated around 2k lbs.  I din't mind the 10 dollar set from Wal-Mart when I had a 400lb bike but with a 700+ lb bike I like the extra strength.  They come loop straps to wrap around a point of the bike so you are not putting hooks straight on your bike as well.  Just lettin' everyone know.

What did you ask of it?  ("Blowing through" the lumber at the back of the trailer indicates something here...)  What was it rated at?  What size strap was it?  Was the strap stored in the sun?  wet and not immediately dried on occasion?  Seen any oil or grease (or PB blaster or WD40 from caring for the ratchet)?  Used weekly or more for a couple or more years?  Even on the cheap ones, the stitches don't let go before the strap tears unless something's wrong with the stitches, or more particularly the threads.   That is a failure that can be prevented by inspection.  How was it installed?  I'll assume you don't still have it, do you have pics of a similar strap?  Pics of how the ATV was secured to the trailer at the time?

nothing wrong with useing your winch as a  tie down if you secure it when you get it where you want it.you can use a back/front strap ocross your gear and suck it down.work smarter and not harder.always be safe and secure so we can do it again!throw the warn 2.5 ci  in the weeds or i'll have to pull you thru again!i rebuild starters and alternators for a living and kinda know my chit!mud and electrics dont mix and i cant figure why they would put a winch of this low stature on the market for atv use!satureate all you switches and contacts with automotive ignition sealer.cheap insureance and a for sure reliability  when you require your gear to work the most.(PAM also works well for you cheap @$$%#)will keep muck from sticking in cracks and crannies and will let go with a simple water hose!spray the hole thing down when cool.ride the heck out of it and by the end of the day you will have the cleanest scoot there!feel free to yell back at me.nelson in east texas....ya hoooooo!

If you're leaving the cable tight, you're leaving the winch prone to be destroyed.
If you're relying on the winch to keep the bike on the truck/trailer, then you're trying to wreck the whole four wheeler.

Rebuilding starters and alternators probably means you're well qualified to fix a broken winch, but it doesn't solve the brittleness of the geartrain, which is the problem with using the winch for a tie-down.  Not actual strength, but brittleness.
