If you just want something that will leave bread crumbs and remember them (say you don't want any maps) I think garmin still has a hand held on the market that will do that for less than 100 bucks.

I think a few of the guys mentioned the etrex...I know nothing about them.
i guess i was a little low, here is an etrex legend for $124
http://www.ecost.com/Detail.aspx?edp=1054224

Here is the etrex h for $80...nor frills, no maps.

Find It and Go
With eTrex H, your adventure can last and last — up to 17 hours on just 2 AA batteries. While you roam, you can store up to 500 waypoints in memory for easy retrieval. Just enter the point you want to go to, and eTrex H points you to your destination (no street or terrain maps). To get home, use Garmin's exclusive TrackBack® feature to reverse your track log and help you navigate back to your starting point.

i've got the Garmin Colorado 400T, awesome unit, comes with the whole US Topo's loaded, here is a pic of the screen from last week where i was checking top speed of my brute at 8309 feet altitude, on the atv i use a RAM mount

Thats what I have. Absolutely, bar none, the best handheld there is. I have the 300, since they didn't sell the 400T w/Canadian topo when I bought mine, and I can get free topo software anyway. Truely awesome unit. I have mine mounted with a RAM mount, which is the best mount you can buy, can't cheap out on a mount for your $500 GPS. Here is a picture of it next to my old eXplorist 500LE, the Colorado is 100x the GPS that piece of crap ever was.

what is the cheapest unit that tracks where you go and allows you to upload it to a computer to put it in mapping software?

will do.  i like that its the only unit i can find that'll do turn by turn road directions, plus point to point off road/boating/etc directions with both street and topographical maps.  and heck, for $200 its worth checking out.

crutchfield has it for $200 w/ free ground shipping.  thegpsstore dot com has it for $190 and offers 2nd day shipping for $10.  my family couldn't get it ordered friday, so they gave me the cash to order it, so i just ordered it from thegpsstore, along with the atv mount for it.  its not waterproof, but weatherproof, so i'll be looking for a way to keep more of the mud/water off it.  i'll let you know how well it works.

got the XOG today.  hooked it up in my truck and so far i like it.  its pretty simple, but i wish it took voice commands.  i'll play around with the topographical maps later and see what all options it has.

well i'm not too thrilled with them charging so much for more maps.  i'll have to see how it does where i ride before i know if i need better maps loaded on it or not.
