i was the original guy in my group to buy a 300lb ****. i had no probs with it but the bike was stolen from me. anyways i bought the winch thinking it was from the the ones who make the axles but its chinese. i hate junk.
i bought a viper and i told a buddy to do the same but he didnt listen and has had it for a month the contacter broke then he got a new one and it worked went to use it again nothing. so far so good with mine.
another buddy bought the **** and the whole thiing went kaput. gears stripped internally. junk. they sent him a new one. he getting ready to pull it off and get a viper.

motoalliance thanks for keeping from making a mistake.
lesson learned is just a soon spend a little more to get better quality.

sorry for the ranting.[:D]

i just got my viper max. i love it! works great. awesome customer service too!

Lawnboy1988 -> RE: viper vs. gori!!a . . .little review. (6/9/2008 9:06:21 PM)

Ditto x10 on the customer service! Peter and Kent (Technician) are top notch honest guys! I called kent up last monday to get the bushing kit for my new MX2000 and it was on my doorstep thursday morning, at no cost to me!!!! I'm putting it on the back of my foreman and from all the good things I heard and read, it has to work great! It looks exactly like my warn and the build quality is surprisingly good. I've got to connect my contactor and switches, but then I'll be in business!

outdrsmn82 -> RE: viper vs. gori!!a . . .little review. (6/10/2008 2:31:07 PM)

hey lawnboy how you liking those swampwitches? i got the same set and i am very pleased with the overall performance of them.

Lawnboy1988 -> RE: viper vs. gori!!a . . .little review. (6/10/2008 2:58:59 PM)

Seem to be wearing very very well! I'm impressed with the performance in mud, but all I have every ridden on previously was stock tires lol. They run smooth on the hardpack, but on rocks they seem to slip a tad. It may be because I have too much air in em. But back on topic; I just installed my MX2000 on the back of my foreman, wired it up, and it works like a champ!! I just used the corded remote and I am definitely impressed. However, I do not like the hook that it came with because the opening is too small to fit over my rack. Small issue and only one so far!!!

outdrsmn82 -> RE: viper vs. gori!!a . . .little review. (6/10/2008 3:21:36 PM)

thanks. for the feedback.

i am waiting for the viper elite to come out. just to see. i just couldnt wait any longer for a winch.

motoalliance -> RE: viper vs. gori!!a . . .little review. (6/11/2008 6:46:00 AM)

Apparently my IQ needs to be checked....I made this posting on the wrong thread last night.[:D]   Much more relevant for this discussion.:

MAN, I don't check HL for a couple of days and you guys are off writing reviews about the ape guys and VIPER. Fun to read!

I can provide a bit of background. Our two companies used to get our winches from the same place. About six months ago, the ape guys switched to a different manufacturer in China -- our guy there said they screwed over the previous factory in the process. He also said the factory they went to might be less expensive, but the quality is going to suffer.

I really can't verify that for sure....just saying what I was told. What I do know is that our factory provides for the SuperWinch and -- from what I understand -- some/all of the internal components of the Ramsey winch. Having been in this business for 4+ years now, I have seen crappy winches come out of China and I have seen good ones. We will ALWAYS pay more on the front end in order to get the best possible quality for the VIPER winch.

The Ape guys will sell a TON of winches....often to younger riders because -- if you are like I was -- you have very little left-over money to spend and a $50-$70 winch is quite appealing. That makes tons of sense to me. But I do think it is quality that will win the day in the end. So Apes are going to sell a lot on the front end and in the short-term, but we are most concerned about rider loyalty in the long run.

So, right or wrong, we are trying to build a company that can appeal and provide to riders awesome products at great prices for their entire life of riding -- both when we really have to pinch pennies at a younger age and when (if we are lucky) we have a bit more discretionary income to get all the bells and whistles of the VIPER MAX or VIPER ELITE. Either way, we tend to think that if riders can trust the company and the product, they will keep coming back.

Our winches are not perfect....1badkittykat had a difficult experience it seems and we have really tried to work with him...but no winches are perfect and I can testify to the fact that our reliability for motors, gears, etc. way exceeds 99%.

Have a good night everyone. Thanks for the discussion.

well peter that would explain why my monkey winch was so good and reliable. i bought mine b 4 they went to china for their winches. my buds got theirs after. well hey hey now i am lucky i went with my gut and spent a little more to have piece of mind. whew.

motoalliance -> RE: viper vs. gori!!a . . .little review. (6/12/2008 7:01:02 AM)

That's really interesting to hear outdrsmn82.  Both our winches do come from China, but ours come from a very reputable factory that does Superwinch and (I've been told) Ramsey winch stuff. Apes just went to someone else in China....that factory may charge the Apes less...but I want to know we are sending the best quality stuff out the door...even if it costs us more to get produced.

outdrsmn82 -> RE: viper vs. gori!!a . . .little review. (6/12/2008 1:05:22 PM)

thats what i like to hear. quality b 4 quantity.

redneckrincon -> RE: viper vs. gori!!a . . .little review. (6/14/2008 2:18:52 AM)

rillas are junk broke two first time ever to use them got a 5 yr old superwinch that is still rollin and that or a ramsey is all i will ever buy not wasting my time on the others done tried rilla and xtreme and very dissappointed with both i am sorry but them winches have put a bad bad taste in my mouth the last time. sorry if i offended anyone but that is my 2 cents

Lawnboy1988 -> RE: viper vs. gori!!a . . .little review. (6/14/2008 8:58:59 AM)

My viper on the back of my foreman is great!!!! I love it! The bushing upgrade kit definitely is a must have!!!!! The first time I used it I was pulling from a hard left and the wire was getting bunched up on that side of the spool, but since the new bushings were in there, there was no way the line was going to jump and get wedged b/t the spool and housing! Thanks Peter for putting out a quality product that works as advertised, for a price that can't be beat!!!!

motoalliance -> RE: viper vs. gori!!a . . .little review. (6/14/2008 9:21:20 AM)

Great news Lawnboy1988.  Thanks for the feedback. I give Kent, our tech from Mettlers ATV full credit for the design.

If production times work, the gasket upgrade will be widely available in 6-8 weeks. Should work on VENOM, XTREME, MONKEY and other winches too....past VIPER buyers will get it for free and it will be standard installed on all our VX2500-3000lb and MX2000-MX3000 winches. Otherwise, it will retail for about $24.99.  Our MX3500-MX4500 winches do not have any housing gap, so the upgrade is not relevant for those.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Peter / Moto

P.S. The ELITE winches are still on schedule for Sept. 1. I was just notified in discussions yesterday that the ELITE motor is being developed by the same factory that produces the Ramsey motors....will be premium quality....very exciting.

I have a 2500,4000 and a 4500lb Viper and the only winch I had to work on is my Wife 2500 warn. " I want a warn on my bike" LOL

outdrsmn82 -> RE: viper vs. gori!!a . . .little review. (7/7/2008 11:24:36 AM)

**** failed again. my viper been thru a few more rides where it has worked fully submersed under water and has pulled flawlessly. i  am a really happy camper right about now. still very satisfied with my purchase. thanks motoalliance.

Lawnboy1988 -> RE: viper vs. gori!!a . . .little review. (7/7/2008 4:13:10 PM)

Lol my Viper worked flawlessly for me again last night. A buddy of mine got stuck on his 420 in a hole where I got my dozer stuck about a month ago, so it was pretty deep. All I could hook to was the rack and just reeled him in! Having 2 winches sure does make it more convenient to pull people out! Thanks Moto!

BrokenKitty -> RE: viper vs. gori!!a . . .little review. (7/7/2008 4:16:06 PM)

YEA im on my fourth monkey winch [&:]  i used it once then it broke [8|] but i keep gettn them for free [:D] .

ddierking -> RE: viper vs. gori!!a . . .little review. (7/7/2008 7:10:39 PM)

Viper winches rock!

outdrsmn82 -> RE: viper vs. gori!!a . . .little review. (7/8/2008 3:12:18 PM)

amen to that. the older gori!!as were good (the one i had) but now the ones my friends have are a real dissappointment to them. not only that but i am a REAL TRASH TALKER to the core. so its "i told you so" every time we ride.
i got this one bud of mine whom i ragged him so much and out mudded him out so many times on his new 08 honda he went the weekend after a ride and spent  9800 on a 08 brute 750 w/ 27" backs and swears he got me. so i got some vamps and now he dont want none. lol. time will tell though. [:D]

motoalliance -> RE: viper vs. gori!!a . . .little review. (7/8/2008 3:23:20 PM)

What a great story....nothing like forcing your buddy to drop 10k on a new bike after you bury his hinder in the mudpits...even if he one-ups you the rest of the summer, he's still 10 grand in the hole.

It has been interesting to follow some of our competitors. I talk with the **** guys from time-to-time. As I've mentioned before, I know they switched the manufacturer. I get quite a few solicitations from winch manufacturers, but we are not terribly interested....even if it involves saving money as we feel our quality is there and improving all the time. I would rather pay a bit more on the front end for something that works. Once you get a bad reputation in the ATV world, it's tough to near-impossible to recover.

Our VIPER ELITE series is still basically on course....perhaps as late as Sept 8, though I've been given a guarantee of Sept. 1. The factories that build Ramsey winches have been working on the VIPER ELITE line for us. Should be a great winch.

Also, the upgraded bushings are still on course for July 16 or so. We're going to hold prices until about August 15 and then there will be a price increase on the MAX2000-MAX3000 series to partially account for the bushings and the winch-line saver that we will offer standard. We are planning on throwing in winch covers on these as well, so even if we add $15 to the price, we think we are putting in three great new items as standard in the winch covers, bushings, and line savers.

Off on holiday for the next 10 days. Someone else from Moto may show up here....we all love paying attention to the boards. Take care.

Peter / Moto
