Insurance was the best mod i ever put on my bike!!! 10 minutes after i bought it, i had a head on collision with another bike on a trail. It buckled the frame the same place as the guys in the story, right behind the front diff. It sucks, but it happens. I didnt blame Can-Am, and i didnt blame myself, it was just an accident. Since that time the only other reason my bike has been back to the dealer is for a ripped CV Boot.  I am pleased with the quality of Can-Am.

sorry to hear about that
Knock on wood, I havnt had problems with mine, I rear end people, hit trees and have flipped it a few times and not even a bent rack...??? His must have been built on a friday night.

Hondas and king quads are bullet proof...
Buddie flipped his king quad 43 times down a cliff, broke all of his ribs, internal problems and a lesson learned on drinkin and drivin atvs. He is okay now, but it just bent the racks, handle bars and pushed the front end back about a foot....hooked it up to a tree and pulled it right back out, goes good...
I know I know, 43 times sounds stupid, But I was stting at the bottom countin. The hill was near a mile up...so pretty steap slate cliffs at the top.

Hi.

I have been researching this can-am frame problem for some time now.

The shape and number of dents in the spar greatly determines the outlanders frame reliability.

Running pieces of the frame through a press shows that the frame is indeed quite strong. Especially in the stretch direction.

I took sections of a slightly bent frame and  ran the same press tests.

Each section would have more and more puck marks, dents and scratches, and gouges from rock hopping.

As you might have guessed. Even a small dent greatly weakens the outlander frame. As far as a general percentage  a two inch long buy 1/8" deep dent dropped the stress resistance by about 12%.

That is not a good result. I would assume that over time this would get much worse even if the remaining frame remained prestine.

A full size skid plate with good mountings is a must.

While the can-am single spar is strong to a certain point. They need more frame and a much more resiliant metal.

I can understand the attraction to reduce weight of any object. However there is a trade off  that is unaaceptable.

Take for example a 400CC engine in a very light atv. If i was not tall and heavy i simply would not have enough traction to haul any trailer. No matter how good one's tires are.

With 250+CC engines you certainly will not see much difference in weight  if you make a single spar frame out of  decent 1/4" thick steel tubing. Not to mention the less stress on the rest of the atv.

Take any quad and do that to it and let me know how it turns out. The frame isnt made to be rolled at 30mph.

my HONDA! rolled over 3 times and ended up landing n a ditch @ 42 mph.....only problem was bent handlebar  & cracked plastic

you where thrown off a bike @ 42mph+ and walked away with no issues come on man old hondas are tough but take a look at this one which took a dive @ about 20mph forward and rolled once when the tire flew off

as you can see very plainly the front portion of the frame is severly twisted like i said less than 20 mph no trees no ditchs and one flip. this happned a few weeks ago to kid not in our group but there are SEVERAL posters in this particular forum who saw the accident.

cant your only get insurance for theft though  not collision.  i mean i have insurance on myy brute, but i believe it only covers theft

You can get insurance to cover whatever you want. I totalled a 06 Brute out and it was replaced by the insurance co with an 07 model.

I have insurance through Farmers for mine. I got theft and collision. They even wanted to put uninsured motorist on it and injury. So, you can insure it to the hilt if you want to. You just have to shop around for insurance companies.

" I think that's the most detailed post I've ever seen for a first post"

I suppose that i will take your word for it.

Apart from a few phots there is little detailed info on the outty frame problems on most atv forums. Except for second hand references as to how fast the driver was going and mostly their attempt to pass the dammage off on the warenty.

One local person did something similar to the 2x4 (wood). They welded together (alternating up/down point) angle irons to make triangle shapes. That ended up about the size of that 2x4  mod.

Slid snuggly into place.

Not a very difficult mod and rather easy to weld.

i can tell u its not about how fast or whatever, its how the fourwheeler hits and how hard it hits.  ive seen my dads 300 roll down a mountain several times on top of big rocks and hit a tree....the only real problem was one side of the handlebars was broke off and the other was touchin the gas tank.  other than that, just a few dents and dings and a flat tire.  $5 later for a used set of handle bars, it was back on the trail.  then a couple hours later, my uncle flipped his 450 goin down a mountain.  it just landed upside down, that hit caused it to bend the back part of the frame.

but from what ive hurd canams to have weak frames, thats why there is the frame mod.   but any fourwheeler can bend in the right situation.

The frame mod is so cheap and easy that I can't understand why anyone wouldn't do it. The extra weight is insignificant.

I cant understand why it is built that way from the factory. The last thing I want to do when I pay  top dollar for a machine is cut it up and stuff it with wood because of a design flaw.

define design flaw.  it works as they intended it.  has everyone or even the majority of owners bent their frame?  nope.  it would be a design flaw if a ton more people were having issues with it.  i've had my outy for almost 2 years without any issues with my frame, and i am definitely not the minority in that.  i've climbed over fallen trees and hit the frame on the tree enough to dent it and i've also caught a tire on a tree or rock at speeds high enough to rip the handlebars out of my hands several times.  not a single issue with my frame.  course just because i have never had any issues doesn't mean i wouldn't want to take some precautions to prevent possible problems down the road.  i put three aluminum square tubes in my frame to reinforce it.

i find it funny how everyone wants to point out how weak the can-am frames are, but its not a major issue that the majority of owners are having problems with.  i would rather see can-am do something about the CVT exhaust snorkel.  most owners have seen the problems with that

the extra steel or wood weight would actually help to lower the center of gravity.  but for those worried about it, use aluminum tube like i did.  i am working to make my outy float, so the added weight was a concern for that purpose.

Yep, it's got a weak frame. Funny how this one didn't get bent like a pretzel. He had done this 35-40 times or so when the movie was made.
