You are right.  But mud and ruts are totally different stories.  Paddles are made for ruts and need to be spun SLOW so they don't get ahead of themselves and eat away what they need to grab.

It you want to get into a mud hole and spin the tires fast thats fine but don't expect to run paddles and spin tires fast in ruts and do any good.

Also deep mud holes don't take on fast speeds well.  Maybe thick surface mud would be great for high speeds but a slow rate of speed with big tires would do better in deep mud to let the tires grab and not spin them too fast.  They will dig too bad.

I have been on a few rides with "The Giant Killer" and to tell u it lives up to the name.  I've seen the Honda spin the paddle fast and slow and either way its a force to be reckoned with!!!

Have yall ever had these in real hard bottom holes with ruts?  Ive always wondered how they would work in GA since we have a good bit of holes that are rutted out with HARD red clay.

In a completly hard bottomed rut they work GREAT but are very rough.  I find they work best when they are being used in muddier conditions so they are not so rough but when on hard clay they bit hard and do great.  Ill try to get some pictures or video's of mine in ruts when i finish it.

If the rut is hard, there's almost no stopping it. I went to Mud Creek with a few friends a few weeks ago. I hit every hole I came across and only found one that I could not come out of without a little bit of help. I easily went through holes that stuck a Polaris 500 with a 2" lift and 28x12.5/9.5 Outlaws! There were a few rutted holes where I had about a foot of air between my tires and the bottom and the paddle just walked me across!!

Not very good. There's not enough surface area for the paddle to grab. Also, being on one side doesn't do much when you high center.

A Honda 300 is about the smallest bike i've seen with a paddle. It would easily be possible to do on a shaft drive Honda Big Red 3-wheeler, although I don't think it's been done before.

I think these guys were interested in one for a Honda Recon. I had one planned, but the sold my recon before I was able to get it built. I don't remember who I spoke with, but here is the idea we came up with.  It would be a slip on design. Using about a 6 inch diameter pipe, weld a cap on the end. make holes to match the bolt patter of the ATV. Weld the paddles to the 6 inch pipe (not sure on the diameter, just big enough to clear the hub). With this, I think you would have to get longer studs to make it work. Most of my riding is trail, but every now and then I go for a good mud run, so I would have been able to easily install it when needed. Haven't saw any built like this, it may not hold up, but that was the idea another member had came up with (he had built several paddles, just can't remember who it was).

I understand the idea, but it wouldn't really be an axle paddle, more of a tire paddle. Simply getting a more aggressive/wider tire would do the same thing.

Not at all would a wider tire held. The paddles would be moved near the center of the bike and you could use one on each side. CtownForeman (sp) has/had some built like this on his foreman

The closer they are to the center of the bike the better it does.  The paddles I build have a paddle "wheel" directly in the center.  This basically makes it impossible to get high centered.  Hub paddles do ok but you still have a gap in the center that is where the most traction can be found.

On the recon, it would have to be on the left side (when viewing the rear).  You would be able to get very close to center. You could probably weld a cap on the other end with a cutout just large enough to slip over the axle and housing (would have to take the hub off to get it on/off).  Either way it would be effective. Here is my old recon with 2 inch lift, if any of you guys have better ideas post them up. I posted a link to this thread for info for a couple different people wanting the paddles on a recon, so it would be beneficial for them.
