ORIGINAL: machz69 ok so is the 31's better then the 29.5's? i don't mean in a water hole i would like to see a test with them in the black stuff.. think stuff not water.. also i see the grizzly with the 31's on had no foot wells?.. is this because of lack of clearance or just preference?.. I'm trying to figure out to go with the 31's x11 or 29's x12..... what are the pros and cons of both?.. I'm located in northern Canada and the mud we have here is black mud in power lines and stuff.. I think I can answer this one...Personally from all my experience in the ATV tire testing field, I'm going to bet that the 29.5" High Lifter Super Outlaws are going to be a better tire than the 31" Super Outlaws. There are a few reasons I have to back up my opinion so here we go. Super Outlaws are known for their height, tread depth, traction, and floating ability. The 31x9x14 Super Outlaws, due to their extra lug on each side of the tire carcass, may aid a little bit in climbing but should definitely be expected to hinder performance in extremely thick mud riding as they have pushed all the lugs closer together, thereby limiting the amount of space these tires have to channel mud out and away form the center of the carcass. This ability is what gives the Super Outlaw its impressive traction abilities. Also, overall tire circumference/diameter is what can make or break your quad's drive train. It should be much more difficult, especially at dead stop, to turn a 31" tall tire rather than a 29.5" tall tire. This all rewinds back to static friction and how much power your quad must apply to overcome this force. Another good fact is that Outlaws are great for floating across those extra deep mud holes. Unfortunately, one of the key elements that allows a tire to do this is girth or surface area (overall mass). The 31x11x14s although I'm sure would float just fine, will not have quite the same abilities in said conditions as the 29.5" Super Outlaws due to their overall width. More overall displacement means that the tire can spread more weight out across the surface thereby causing less load over such a small area. With all this said, I think the 29.5s are "Golden" and the need for improvement is almost not necessary, great height, great mudding abilities, great floater...overall...GREAT TIRE!
