It's too big for conceal and carry, but it would be something you could use for defense at home.

When I took my concealed carry permit course, the instructor said that he had been a SWAT officer in Miami for a few years. He told a story of a guy he was forced to shoot who was hopped up on drugs. It took 22 rounds from a 9mm to stop him. A 9mm is so fast that the bullet passes through before it has a chance to expand. You may shoot the target and the person behind them. He highly recommended nothing smaller than a .40 caliber. A .45 is better. A .45 hits like a sledgehammer. The bullet from a .45 is only traveling 800 - 900 fps. There is very little chance of the bullet passing through. Another great round is the .357 magnum. It is primarily a revolver round. Unless you get a bad round a revolver is going to fire. There is no chance of a revolver jamming at the moment of truth. Just my two cents.

Try the Corbon Glaser's. Air marshalls use them in 9mm so they don't come back out, they stay in what you shoot.

One decent headshot would've stopped him. Also, quality hollow-points are the way to go for personal protection ("modified" HPs are even better, dont know if they are legal but they are devistating). Also, a SWAT officer may have been carrying an MP-5 (which is full auto). 22 rounds is easy to get off through one of those, before the person hits the ground... 9mm is plenty for personal protection, some people feel under-gunned with 9mm and opt for larger, but 9mm is MUCH better than 0mm. As far as I've read, .357 has the greatest one-stop-shot rate out there. I must say, I would much rather be shooting my 1911 in a "gunfight" than my 9mm

I've been shopping around with my dad (still got a year before I can buy mine) and I have fallen in love with the smith and wesson m&p. It's one of the best balanced guns I've ever put in my hands. It fits my hand like a glove and isnt too heavy. Can't say to much about the performance b/c I haven't got to fire one, but im sure it won't dissapoint. Im still debating on going with the 45 or 40 though.
For playing around I love ruger mark II's. At one time we had three of them. One blued bull barrell, one tapered stainless and one compretition target with slab side barrell in stainless which is what the olympic shooting team uses. I've shot these things since I was old enough to hold one up and theres probably not another .22 I want in my hand.
oo and someone mentioned the browning citori...I know it's a shotgun and doesn't belong in this thread, but I love them as well. My dads got a xt trap that I can't keep my hands off and I shoot a xs sporting thats not to shaby itself. They are some of the best looking and shooting o/u guns for the money. I know they are expensive compared to 870's and such, but they don't even begin to scratch the surface of a ceasar gureni or a krieghoff.

I have to ask why you want a 9mm? Our local Police Dept.s down here had 9mm along time ago but studies and history has shown that a 9mm bullet size and speed does not have the knock down power needed for a strung out crack head. They keep on coming unless you are just out for head shots..
I have a model G20 and I love it.. If a crack head runs away you can shoot and kill the motor in there car.

What kinda heat you packin?
Thinking about getting one. Maybe some pleasure shooting, but mostly protection. Thinking along the lines of: 9mm, .38, .357. NO revolvers. Clips please! The only pistol I've ever shot was my dad's S&W 9mm. Stainless and pretty sweet.
Any thoughts/suggestions? I am an avid hunter and have a decent assortment of hunting guns. I know how to be safe with them. Just don't know much about pistols.
S&W 4006 is my baby.

Montana you just gotta go thru a pistol and defense training course, then go to the sheriffs office and apply for the ccw, and fingerprint/ fbi background check...
No you cant "buy" a pistol under 21, as far as i know all states are 21+ only, but you can have like your dad or someone buy it for you, you can own them just not buy them... stupid aint it...

In Louisiana you can't even have a pistol in your posession unless you are 21. I'm 19, but I always keep a box of .270 bullets and some buckshot in my truck. But it sucks that I can't have a pistol, so for now it will just have to do shooting my dads.
I think the Glock 40 cal would be a good choice for protection. Very reliable, good stopping power, fairly cheap ammo. You can also pick them up pretty cheap at pawn shops used just make sure you check them out really well for wear when buying. If you just want something to plink with go with a 22. I know I know people are going to eat me up for saying that but for just having fun shooting a 22. cant be beat. Very accurate, no recoil to wear your wrist out, and very cheap ammo. JMO What ever you do just always buy the best quality gun you can afford. Guns can be handed down through the years if you buy quality and take care of them. And that means alot to most people to say this was my grandfathers double barrrel when he was 15.
Studies and history have shown that the 9mm is inferior to the larger rounds, no questions asked. But a 9mm is better than just a fist. It also gets more difficult to conceal a thicker firearm such as a .45, trust me I would much rather carry my Springfield Armory 1911 on me than my Kahr 9mm but concealing that .45 is a joke with me. I looked at other .45s as well, even a smaller Karh P45 but it is still thicker than my P9 When you are small and skinny like me, every 1mm in size with a gun makes a difference..... sux.
But would I ever love to have my 1911 on my hip, that would be sweet.
.22s are the best range gun out there, the ammo is so cheap it is unreal.

The best choice for personal protection in a handgun caliber is the one you have with you when you need it.
For small handed people the smaller guns are better.
My wife carries a Kel-Tec P32 in .32 Auto but she has a S&W 3913LS (9mm) and a Glock 19 (9mm) for home and car protection.
I have a Kel-Tec P3AT (.380) that I carry when I am in my shorts or swim suit or anytime I need to put it in my front pocket. I have a Glock G17 (9mm) for any instances when I might need 19 rounds or 33 in some cases of course there are always a couple extra mags available. For carrying when I am fully clothed my sidearm of choice is my Kimber Pro CDP (.45 ACP) with Hornady 230 gr. XTP's loaded in Wilson 47D magazines.
I had always been a Glock "Hater" until I tried one and it is a nice firearm. Is it the best looking? No. Is it the most expensive? No. Will it get the job done? Yes it will and it will do it more reliably than many.
You need to find out what size gun will fit you the best.
There are good and bad products from most manufacturers so when you think you have found the right one then ask about that one.

I have several pistols, and recommend the Glock series, in either .40 or 9mm. My favorite Glock is the 10mm if you can still find one. Glock is a fine firearm although it does lack a physical safety.
H&K is a very nice firearm, IMO is much more user friendly than a Glock. Has a nicer grip, more natural feel, and much faster on target.
Colt is old school, if you get one stay with the Commander 1911. If you want concealed carry, the MustangII in .380 is also nice.
If you like the old Colt 1911's and have money to burn, get a Kimber. IMO possibly the finest firearm ever made.
I don't like Sig's. Can't put my finger on it, just don't like them.
FNH is my current favorite, as I have just purchased the USG 5.7mm. Although technically a .22 round, it has amazing knockdown, not to mention accuracy or speed on target.
Just my opinions, through it out the window if you want to.

There's lots of choices. I have 2 9mm's right now, and a 44. I have the 44 mainly for when I camp out in the woods of maine, pa, and some other places that have animals I will not pi** off, just drop them to the ground.
The 9mm is a fun gun to shoot, target shoot, and very easy to carry. My 9mm loaded with 15 rounds (+1) is small enough to fit under a jacket, pocket ect. It's less weight than my 44 loaded, and I have more rounds. 50 rounds of 9mm is around 6 bucks, 50 rounds of 44 is like 25 bucks, so again depending on what you shoot.
Self defense, problably the best would be a 357. Good all around size, knock down power, ect. However you can compare bullets.&nb
