Thanks for all your help but I am still unsure if I'm going to get one or not. I'll see when I start riding again. haven't been able to because the Spillway by my house is closed off for the time being.  I just don't like the fact of it being hard to turn. To get this straight, its usually just hard to turn when in 4wd not 2wd. correct?!

I am not a mechanic and I rebuilt mine and replaced wheel bearings and installed the disc brake conversion all in about 6 hours spread out over a couple days after I would get home from work. I never did anything like it before, but the instructioins were good and the forums very helpful.

With the DGL, it ain't that hard to turn that it will make you regret installing it; trust me. I hear the other types of lockers are horrible for turning though...

Get a bike with a locker in it... in 4wd its like a honda, it 3 wheels, when you hit the locker, its locked, no questions asked, and you dont have to rebuilt it.

Mud Man_500, I thought I made it clear that the spool NOT the DGL is hard to turn. Sorry if you didn't understand my first answer to your questions. In the mud you hardley know it's in there. On pavement in a hard fully locked turn it steers harder than stock, but I don't know why you would even be in 4wd on pavement. In 2wd your 500 steers exactly like it does now. Don't sweat the steering, that why we brought out the easy-steer DGL. Like I said before, it is really a great mod. Some kids and a bunch of our female customers run it with no problems. I see the "Man" in your name, so I assume you won't have trouble steering with this locker........lol.

I LOVE MY DGL!!  DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME ON A SPOOL LOCKER......WAY TOO HARD TO STEER.  LIKE BUSH HOG SAID, YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW IT'S THERE IN 2WD, AND IN 4WD IT'S THE DIFFERENCE IN NIGHT & DAY!!  DO BE PREPARED TO POSSIBLY HAVE TO BUY SOME AXLES.  I BROKE MY RIGHT AXLE AND PUT SOME ****'S ON & HAVEN'T HAD A BIT OF TROUBLE.  ALL IN ALL, THE DGL IS THE WAY TO GO!!

If there is no traction on the front wheels then they will both spin, but as soon as one tire touches then it will stop spinning. The other tire that has no contact with the ground will spin which helps nothing towards getting out of the mud. With a locker such as a dgl or most yamaha's, no matter what tire is touching the ground it will pull. Making this a true 4wd but since a honda will only turn 3, this is why they are called 3wd.

Does the differential have to be machined? or you just install by just following directions.?

All you have to do is take out the diff and follow the istructions. No machine work at all, just switching internals.

If you use a spool then even when your in 2wd then your front wheels are still locked. This will give you one heck of a work out on a good days worth of riding.

YES, you are right!!!  It's always refreshing when somebody sees this, even if the vision is a little less than complete.   They say "Three wheel drive" because of simple assumptions and a general misunderstanding of how a differential functions.  It's simply not the case.  What they mean to say is that Honda's don't offer a locking differential from the factory, so you if you need one you have to add it.
If your kind of riding, mudding, or other adventures tends to keep all four wheels firmly on the ground as you imply by the statement above, then my guess is that a locking differential isn't something that's going to benefit you much if at all.  If you have troubles with lifting a front tire, therefore loosing traction to the front of the machine, then you would want to consider a locker to help you in that particular situation.

Ok, here's one for the assembled masses:

I just picked up a used 2001 Kodiak for my wife from a dealership.  It had huge mud tires on it and was a b@#@ to steer, but otherwise ran great and had obviously been upgraded and tuned.  After getting four new tires today, (Anyone need a set of mud tires?) I tested it out.  Improved but not usable for the wife.  This thread seems to have given me the answer to my issue, the previous owner had installed a spool locker and used this as a mud machine.

Now, how do I get rid of this spool locker?  One hour on this thing a few days ago and she was sore for days.  No gym membership necessary.

Thanks.
