ORIGINAL: Kodiak_style!

You can run 28's with no problems. I ran 27's with no lift for a long time. I've always ran 12's in the rear and 10's on the front, except when I had the EDL's. They were 10 all the way around.

I'm looking at getting some Mud Bugs for my '97 Kodiak & was looking at getting the 27x10x12's in the front & the 27x12x12's in the rear ... I noticed you said you had the exact same size at one point & time ... does the extra width on the front & back (particularly the front) not make it have any rubbing problems? It just looks to me like you might have some problems with the tires hitting the fenders & such. BTW, I'll be installing a 2 inch lift kit on it as well.

On a side note .. have any of you guys installed an aftermarket clutch kit? .. and if so, which one did you go with & are you satisfied with the results? I've been looking for one with more "stall/engagement points/etc" like some of the clutch kits for some of the other ATVS out there (especially those that are suggested to be installed with big tires) but either I'm blind or they just don't make 'em ...

Thanks for the info!!

I have no rubbing problems at all with 27's. I do have the 2" and it won't even rub on big bumps. I don't have a clutch kit in mine yet, but I'm also interested in knowing what's out there for them.

I have never put a clutch kit in mine and I have run 26" outlaws and now I am running 28 EDLs and I haven had a problem turning anything. So I am gonna leave it alone until it starts slipping.

I other question, now that I'm gettin into this when I bought my kodiak, it was off a farmer who had boughten it new, and had never licensed it, the brake cable has worn tho the vin sticken, where would the vin be stamped on the fram? so I can get a ownership for this thing.......

Well I don't see how you guys are running 28's .. I just put the lift kit on as well as some 27 inch ITP 589's (which really measure out to 26 inch) & I have way less than an inch of clearance between my fenders & my tires. As a matter of fact on the gear shifter side it does actually rub at times. I'll try & get some pics up in the next few days.

Hey guys...

Does anyone have a link to a "how to" on replacing the crank journal? My local yamaha dealer says "its too hard to do you have to send it out to yamaha and have them do it"  Bull sh!t is all I have to say... he says they don't even do them themselves.. quoted me $300 just to replace the journal.... of coarce they also wanted $600 p/tax for the rod and gaskets, and i have it coming from the u.s. for $110

Hey Skippie,
Did you find your VIN?
I don't know how to fix the crank journal, but I have used that same expression with my local dealer too!

Where was it? Also try any type of spray lube (WD-40, penetrating oil), let it sit over nite, then brush with a bronze/brass/none etching brush and see if it clears up.

i'm curious... could you use the front diff (w/ locker) out of a new 07 big bear/grizzly/kodiak 450 and shoehorn it into an older kodiak? i mean yamaha probably didn't change anything too much up there... if the shafts will work, you'll might just have to weld in a brace or two to hold the diff in there and then run the wiring. then you'd have selectable 2WD/4WD/diff lock. i'm pretty certain i saw somewhere that the older kodiak uses the same ring and pinion ratio as the newer models, so the swap might be a high possibility.

Or, how hard would it be to drop a 93-98 kodiak engine/trans into a 07 big bear? i'd be cool to have that hi/lo trans with the new bear. i found the trans specs on these things a while back... the newer 400 big bear has a 60:1 low gear (1st) crawl ratio, while the 93-98 kodiak had a 67:1 low/1st gear ratio (more pulling power). Plus in high range, the 93-98 trans had taller gearing so you could cruise a little faster on the trails without buzzing the engine too hard.

The froont diff would be harder said thatn done. I have also thaught about using a grizz diff but the electrocial stuff is also controled by the CDI. The shafts going into the front diff will have a different splines and then the axles will also have differen splines and posible cups. In order to do it you would have to have the front diff, driveshaft, axles, spindles, hubs, and A lot of fab work. I have looked into it and it would probly cost you att least $500 if you could get the parts REALLY cheap. But that is jsut a starting number. if I ever do anyhting like this it would use a worverine 350 or a big bear front diff tthat way you can put a DGL in it and then rig up a WARN 4-2-4 deal. That would be alot more practicle.

Hey guys. I just picked up a 1996 yamaha kodiak from my uncle. The guy he bought it from broke and oil cooler line and seized the engine. At the moment there is no engine it at all when i find one, i thinki will be putting a hi comp piston in it and a cam, snorkle it and K&N and a costom muffler. will it be able to turn 27x10 front 27x12  mudbugs with a lift?
