it says that is brings it up to 435cc so I am guessing that it they are rounding it up to a 450.

it you bore it .30 over you will feel a big difference. you can also have he head ported and polished. This will help alot too. And you dont need a custom ground cam. web cams makes 2 different ones for the worrior, big bear, and kodiak. I would advise to get the 88 grind cam it will improve overall performance.

The old school kodiaks are the dual range manuals 400s. 1993-1998, 1999 is when they went to automatic.

Actually the 99 Kodiak is a Big Bear 400 with a Big Bear 350 frame. They made the automatic kodiaks in 2000

The older Kodiak lives on.

Do some searching on google for "big bear professional"  (be sure to use the quotes). I recently returned from an extended stay overseas, and while traveling around Europe I saw what looked to be a 97-98 Kodiak. Turns out that Europe and the UK still have (or recently had) that model of Kodiak in production (SRA, dual-range trans, exact same ATV with disc brakes up front), just renamed. I am seriously thinking about having one imported...

Edit: Looks like Canada and some other countries have been getting this version too:
http://www.yamaha-motor.com.au/motor/index.htm?prod_detail.asp?MD_ID=44&modelcatid=10

I have found some 2005 models on some dealer websites, but that appears to be the last year for them.

WOW! That is awesome. I would love to have one of those. If you are serious about importing one, let me know I get one too and help on shipping. I have a commercial account with ABF trucking and if we could get one out Canada it would be reasonable. I love how it looks like the old Kodiak with a Big Bear bumper and headlight pod.

Now, my gripe. If the dual range 386cc engine is still in production, why in heck isn't it on US Big Bears. -- Especially since they are pushing the '07 as a mudder. Imagine a Big Bear that would run 50-55 MPH like the old Kodiaks will. The only "bad" thing about a Big Bear that its low geared since it doesn't have a low range tranny.

I am liking what I am seeing. that looks jsut like the kodiaks. it is the same motor and trany. now I wonder if the diffs and axles are the same. The body looks like the 600 grizz. it has the oil cooler like the 350 big bears. Bit it has disk  brakes!! that is awsome. I wonder how much they go ofro over there?

Snorkling a 93-98 Kodiak is very simple. I came off my airbox with a piece of 1 1/2" reinforced spa hose and ran it up front under the rack and glued it into a PVC 90, and then 1 1/2" electrical conduit up. I glued a PVC union and a 2" piece of PVC pipe to the end of the hose that connects to the airbox. I did this to give something rigid to clamp to. You will need to vent the crankcase. I vented mine up the snorkel at first, but kept getting condensation in it that would blow back on me. I came back and drilled a hole in the airbox, and glued a 3/8" barbed fitting into the box. Other than that you'll need to vent your diffs, drum brakes, and carb vent. I vented them all together using barbed T fitting and ran it up the snorkel. Here a few pics of mine.

no there is not an off the shelf WARN 424 unlocker. I am in the process of designing a way to make a worlverine. I was jus looking and ATV direct says that they have one for a 97-99 big bear 350. Well the front diffs and drive shafts are the same on the 350s as the 93-98 400s. I just pulled the diagrams of a 1997 350 and a 94 400 and the froont diffs and drive shafts all look the same. Well this is a plus becuase I have been thinking about gettting one and modifying it to work. I guess I will be getting one sometime. I guess after I get the motor fixed. I woundt recomend anyone that dones have the ability too modify one to buy one just yet. I will get one and see if it works becuase if it dosent I can make it work. but I just saw that they have one for the 350 big bear. the last time I looked that didnt.

the early 90s-98 Kodiak 400s and early 90s-96 Big Bear 350 have the same front end and driveshaft.  They are however completely different from the 97-99 BB or Wolverine.  You could possibly make it work but it would take some HEAVY modification.  The older Kodiaks and BBs have a very long driveshaft due to the transfer case being at the rear of the motor and the front diff is angled down in the front end. Thats why these older models have u-joint problems like they do because of the strange angle and length of the driveshaft.  The newer BBs and wolverines have an output shaft that goes completely through the bottom end emliminating the transfer case.  So the front driveshaft on these is much shorter.  Ive been working on riding these bikes for years and i have LITERALLY worked on everything on these bikes.  I could probaly answer any question you had.  How this helped some!

ok well that is what I thaugtht. I guess the diagrams are jsut wrong. It makes since because all of the 424 selects that they make are all short, like the hondas. About the only way to make one work on a older bog bear or kodiak is to cut the drive shaft to length and then make it adapt to the 424. They only thing is weather or not the splines are the same on the u joint at the diff. it they were the same then you could jsut mate the 424 into the diff and make your drive shaft fit. of course there is going to have to be alot of bracing done to make everything strong enough. And another problem is that the 424 is aluminum. so you woudl have to come up with a way tot mount it. I really dont know for sure what would have to be done without being able to see a wolverine or big bear 424 select. but if the splines were the same then it woundt be that hard. It cacn be done, it is jsut how much do you want to spend. I have delt with mine always being in 4wd just becauses I havent had time to do this yet but has been on my mind for aobotu a year now. My kodiak is only for mud ridign and bogs so I really dont need to come out of 4wd. and if I unlocked mine from 4wd my front diff is still welded up so it woudl still be hard to turn.

I have never had any u-joint problems out of mine. But he is probly refering to the u joints getting in a bind and breaking.

I broke the front U-joint closest to the diff on my '95. They are kinda at a funky angle, but I've only replaced it the one time. I just bought a set of 28" EDL's for it, so it might get broke again!

Yea the length of the driveshaft and the angle of it reaks havok on u-joints.  Its not a major problem but you will have to replace u-joints more often than other models.
