Well, i read on a post a few weeks back that the john deere gator used tha same front diff as the sportsmans. My front diff started acting up and when i took it apart it was just dirty. One output seal had failed and the inside was very dirty. Everything was ok except my rollers. they were a little rusty so i decided to try the john deere rollers for $15 or $18. I called the local dealer to order them and he said that his diagram showed that they come with the cage for 55 bucks, so i decided to give them a try(even though i didn't need the cage). He called me a couple of days later to tell me that the cage comes with the springs and not the rollers so he was ordering me a set of rollers. I went to pick em up a few day later and i bought the cage assembly (cage, springs and wear plate) on the condition that i could return them if it didn't work. I guess he didn't want to get stuck with them. The rollers were exactly the same as the popo. A direct replacement. The cage was a little different. It was made of black plastic and was slightly longer (less than 1/8") than the popo. I measured the cage and cage cavity a few times and confirmed that even though it was a little longe it would fit. Its construction looked a little sturdier. The slots on the outside were filled in and the extra length went into the beefing up the outer rings of the cage. The slots for the wear ring to slide on are offset from the popo ones. they line up with the rollers instead of between them. The springs are a bit stiffer. The wear plate was also a bit different. The dimensions were exactly the same but it had a sort of star-shaped pattern to it instead of the popo's circle. I have a spare diff and pulled it apart to check that one and it has the same exact wear plate. I believe it was off an 04 700. I have pics below.
Anyway i put them in and everything works fine. Only a couple of things i noticed, when taken out of 4wd it takes a little while longer to shift out of 4wd. My diff used to take a while anyway. I sometimes used to shift into reverse to get it out but it still takes longer than before. Also one time the diff stayed in 4wd(with the switch on) while in reverse but witout pushing the overide button. The only thing i can see that could be causing the diff to stay in 4wd a little longer is that because the wear plate slides are lined up with the rollers and the cage is slightly longer, the teeth on the wear plate may be contacing the rollers slightly and holding them longer in the locked position. Never once did the diff shift into 4wd once it had disengaged and it always goes into 4wd immediatly when wheel slippage is detected. I'm going to leave it in for a while and to see if it holds up and check its durability. Imay also pull it down one more time to check if the wear plate teeth are indeed contacting the rollers and if it is, maybe shave them down to reduce contact.

Well I bet most of us on here will be very thankful for trying it. Thanks for posting this. Its going to save all of us a great deal of money.

Just as a side note, when you press the override button while going in reverse, the 4wd will disengage untill you come to a stop even if you let go of the button before. Maybe this is what was happening.

I wonder if that will help the diff in some way... It should work better if not the same because I doub't they changed it for nothing... Only time will tell.

also, when he ordered the cage, the parts guy said thatthere were only 5 in stock at the distribution center. He also added that they must not go out too often!! Maybe not on a gator, but 29's or 30's on with a bunch more power and throw in some ruts and roots and we all know what happens.

Do you have the john deere part #'s? A break down of all the part's that you aquired would be a good idea to put this in the polaris sticky at the top of the forum.

part numbers would be VERY nice.  At those prices it would make sense to carry one for a spare.

Roller Kit-MIA 10666- Identical Match
Cage Kit-MIA10667(Slightly longer, black plastic cage, springs and wear plate)
Total for the 2 kits with tax $91.95. Each kit took approx 2-3 days to come in. Sure beats $330 + shipping from Polaris.
I don't want to get on the bad side of people here so please note:
The diff does say in 4wd slightly longer than the previous cage did. I'm talking 20-30 feet while turning slightly(to see if it was in 4wd) on pavement after taking the switch out of 4wd after climbing out of a ditch that required 4wd to get out of.
Also it did stay in 4wd once while shifting from forward with 4wd engaged to reverse with the switch on and the overide button NOT pressed.
Just trying to cover my ***. This is how it has worked out for me, no gaurantees. Also don't know how durable it will be. Haven't had a chance to really get on it yet in some really bad stuff. But it does look more durable.
At that price, it would definately be a good spare to have at mud fest or some big weekend ride. It sure would suck to have the cage break on day one and have to ride the rest of the ride in 2wd when you could have a spare cage for approx $60.
Anyway, hope this helps someone.

Those pictures are the new style cage and armature plate. They are direct replacement parts, identical to what Polaris started using in the 06 diffs. The black cage is stronger and the new shaped armature plate does not get magnetized as easy. Been running these parts for quite awhile.  Those prices are definitely cheaper. Also on a side note, Polaris does make or build the diff. They buy it from a company in New York.

Yeah the black cage is what they use now its an updated part I guess i just rebuilt the diff in my 04 and I was skeptical about it working because it is a little longer. But it works the same as you said takes a little longer to come out of 4x4 but thats awesome that it worked I just paid 100 for new rollers and 270 for cage and armature plate canadian but it still hurt the bank account wish this would have been posted 2 weeks ago lol

How much was the ones you ordered from Polaris Rafy ???

I have a pretty good friend of mine that ownes the local John Deere place in my town, coincidentally also ownes the ONLY two Honda/Kawi/Yammi shops in the town too, THEN on top of that my good friend that use to work at the car dealership with me is the parts manager there now, so tomorrow I'll definitely be calling to see what I can get those part numbers for. I'll have a spare set, that's for sure.

He gave the actual part numbers for the items, that should be all you need.

I've already called my John Deere store and ordered me one of each part number. I think I got the LAST ones in the system too because he even told me that they only show ONE of each part number in their system so he ordered me the ones they show in the system, should have them by next tuesday. Less than $80.00 for it all.

I was the one that put in the post.  I would have ordered one right away but my parts manager didn't want to get stuck with it if it didn't work.  Thanks a bunch for trying it out and posting your results.  John Deere only uses the hilliard front diff in there new HPX gators.  There is a serial number break.  If you go to your local dealer have them look up a HPX gas model gator.  Look up the front diff for the highest serial number.  I installed a new Polaris armature plate at the beginning of the year and it looks just like the one from John Deere.   Again thanks a million for trying it.  It will save alot of people a bunch of money!
