I would use the 12" all the way around to give yourself a bigger foot print. It all really depends on how deep though?!

I would strongly advise you do NOT go with 12" wide for snow.   If you are on well travelled trails with a good set of ruts, chances are these ruts will be alot narrower then your 12" tires.  This will either rob alot of power with your tire squeezing into the ruts on loss of control when you "pop" outta them.  When i slapped the 12's on my 450 i knew right away id made a mistake, i was lagging way behind the other 450's.  Looking forward on seeing how the 700 deals with this.

What do you tenenessee folks know about snow? :P

We have more ice than snow. I never had good luck with the skinnies in the ruts, they dig too much. But then again I do ride a brute. j/k......sorta. LOL

Yes a wide tire with low air pressure wil float on top of the snow much better then a skinny tire will, i have read Mudlites do well in snow well see this winter..

For virgin trails, wides for sure, but up here a virgin trail may be 6 feet of snow which takes tracks, not tires.

For the ruts, from experience, my 12" bugs on a kodiak 450 was ****.  My brother on the same bike with 8" and 10" blew by me.  I think what it comes down to the most is how much snow you need to displace, or how much will be displaced from your lugs, and then, how much power can you spare to take care of this extra load.  Because even on packed snow my speed was effected big time. there was days when i topped out at 60 km/h while me bro was doin 80km/h easy.  You say your skinnies dug too much..on a brute...this is for a honda 420.  Apples and oranges imo.

Up in Quebec where i do most of my riding, winter riding is more popular then summer riding.  And pretty much everyone runs 8" and 10"s with ITP's and bearclaws being the most popular "snow" tire.  Let me tell you i made no friends with those huge ruts i left behind, some bikes would bottom out the second they hit my ruts.  I think there are advantages and disadvantages to both types of tire, but on a smaller bike i'd never go with 12"s again.  Just my 2 cents :)
