ive got an 07 500 efi, ive already got the computer reset or soemthing like that and needed a new wire soddered in. not 60 miles after i get this done its already screwin up. i mean i ride a bit of mud and sometimes the odd one gets deep but its not like im in it all day like allot of u guys and cant figure out wats wrong and i am ready to get a carb bike again. the deepest i had it was top of wheel well for a very short time and not right away but later in the day just on trails its startin to stall, and sputter and not idle right or idle high or not even start and if it does go right its boggin on the bottom but i still have the same top end. are the twins or 08's any better for the efi system, also what year did the 700 stop being made as carb?

Are you sure the problem is the ECM. It almost sounds like you need to clean up the ground at your ignition coil and hit it with some dielectric grease. Have you greased up your spark plug?

i dont think its anything to do with the ignition system cuz many others ride the same thing i do with no problems without efi bikes. the last time i got it fixed it ran good until this last ride and that is started acting up again so the did fix it but a bit more water and bam it could have left me in the busonna look at a 700 carb in a 05 or 06

THE SURE FIRE BOX ON A 500 IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT THEN A IGN BOX ON A, LETS SAY 700 OR 800 EFI! A 500 SURE FIRE BOX LETS EVERYTHING RUN THOUGH IT, INCLUDING THE INGNITION. IT BASICALLY TELL THE ECM WHATS GOING ON AS A 700 OR 800 THE BOX JUST CONTROLLS THE IGNITION ASPECTS OF THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. A 500 BOX IS BASICALLY AS SUB-BRAIN TO THE MAIN ECM. EARLY 07 MODELS(BUILT BEFORE 04/07 HAD A RE-CALL ON THEIR BOXES FOR THIS REASON. THEY REPLACED THEM WITH A DIFFERENT SERIAL #

yes i have read up tonight about all this stuff and i have seen allot of people with efi problems, more-so with 500's is what it seems. but i feel just like going back to a good reliable carb bike, cuz i kno one of these times its gonna leave me, its not even fun to ride it right now, gutless on the bottom end cuz it feels like its bogging, stalling and sputtering, not starting and eratic indling. maybe i got a lemon?

Never had a problem with those symptoms in water on my EFI, but would a 500 be different than an 800?

I still say check your ignition grounds. I've never had a problem with mine and I have been thru plenty of deep stuff.

I currently have the same problem with my 07 800.  I haven't yet decided if it is because of water or not, but after about 2 hours into a ride you can count on it misfiring about every 30 seconds...not enough to kill it but you feel the surge.  It will kill it if it is at idle, but fire right back up.  Mine seems to be effecting the fan too.  I am just riding it until it finally gives up!  Bought a 08 500 carb two weeks ago...don't think I'll be buying another 800 for a while.  The 500 followed the 800 everywhere. Even with about 3" different groud clearance!!

Join the ever growing club of EFI haters.   Don't worry because you are not alone with this as this club is getting huge and will continue to grow until polaris realizes the faults in their system.

Now mind you I am not blaming the engineers for this syetm but rather the head chiefs that say what they can do and can't do or can use or can't use.

It is all about money with this stuff so the bottom line is that the EFI crowd is stuck with it.

The days of K.I.S.S. ( Keep It Simple Stupid) are gone in favor of machines that start with the flick of a switch on a cold winter morning.   Seems people have forgotten how to use a choke and let a machine warm up a couple mins.

I mean look back at the old days. We had a simple vaccum impulse fuel pump, a carb, fully sealed CDI box and a coil along with some simple circuit breakers along with a stator assembly.lighting coil etc inside the recoil housing.

Now they added high pressure electronic fuel pumps (they are like light bulbs), a relay center (far from being element proof) and ECM (again far from being element proof) a host of sensors and other odds and ends un top of the alreay listed things.

I am sorry Polaris but you guys took one of the most bullet proof machines in the industry and turned it into a problem child in favor of quick start ups at -20 degree temps.

As far as altitude changes, well there are products in the industry that work very well for carbed machines and altitude changes.   They were simple and simply worked.

Oh well I am done with this one for now.

I have other things to think about for my upcoming venture in the industry.

I was not real keen on the EFI idea either. I went to the dealer for a carbed 500 for the wife. The dealer and the wife talked me into the EFI. The dealer of course wanted to sell the more expensive bike and the wife simply like the color options that the EFI had to offer that weren't available in the HO models. We bought it late Friday night. The very next morning, we were going to load up and go ride and it wouldn't start or do anything, it was totally dead. Some how the ECM box shorted out over night. I tinkered around with all day until it was too late to take it to the dealer, then we had to wait until Tuesday to take it back. They replaced the box and it's been fine ever since but it sure left a bad taste in my mouth for EFI. Had I bought the carb model that I went for in the first place, that would have never happened.

How do you figure you've been lucky? You have a carbed bike. We're bashing EFI's in this thread.

that used to be the case until they come out with the HO EFI which makes no sense to me. guess they needed to call it something since they have a lil more power than the regular efi.
