Personally, I'd avoid the lawn and garden battery. They are mostly flooded cell lead acid batteries, and will likely need a vent hose and can spill if tipped. Most ATV's come with an AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) type battery. They are sealed, won't spill even if the case is broken, resist vibration better, resist freezing better, and generally last twice as long... but they are a bit more expensive. The crackling or growling sound makes me wonder if something is arcing. WEAR EYE PROTECTION and clean up the terminals and put it on a trickle charger (like battery tender), and once it is fully charged load test it or see if it will start the quad. Sometimes an internal connection in the battery can crack, and arc when charging or trying to start. Since batteries produce explosive gas when charging, this can cause an explosion. ABSOLUTELY MAKE SURE YOU PROTECT YOUR EYES when working around batteries, especially this one.
