Go to dodgetalk forums. They have many posts about getting better fuel economy out of the hemi. There is also a site www.airram.com that sales products for the hemi and 4.7 that help. The guy who run airram posts on dodgetalk and he knows his stuff. He has a 4.7 liter ram with many upgrades and gets about as good of MPG as any quad cab dodge I have seen. If I remember right he gets like 22 mpg on the highway with 4.56 gears and aftermarket cams and intake and exhaust. I know my 4.7 dodge averages about 11 mpg in the city or hwy.
btw what is your average mpg in the hemi? Is it an 08 with the multi displacement setup?

Well 16.5 is far better than mine has ever got. Even when I had the stock 17's with 255 tires on them I would get like 13.8 on the hwy. I drive a 640 mile one way trip when I travel from Fort Campbell, ky to Shreveport, la and I always thought it would get better. I now have 305/70/16 tires on 16x8 inch wheels on it with a leveling kit and get 11 mpg. Its an 07 regular cab 4x4 with the 4.7 and auto. I have just come to realize mine is not getting any better and I will soon be trading it in.
Thats why I asked if yours was a new hemi with the MDS. I have heard those actually do ok on the highway. Not like a chevy ok (20mpg) but ford, dodge ok (18 mpg). I am considering one of those when I trade mine because they are practically giving them away, about 15 grand off MSRP for a quad cab hemi 4wd SLT.

Why in the world would anyone own anything that gets 11mpg highway?  Do what I did...get a diesel.  I get about 21mpg highway.  As soon as I get cold air intake, high ram system, and exhaust I shoud be getting around 23-25mpg highway.

What he said /\. My cousin has a 06 (I think) 4dr long bed 4x4 2500 Cummins 600 and he gets 26-27mpg with only a programmer. Hes also running 35s, not sure what gears he has.

Well I would get a diesel if I could justify it but this is my last deployment in the army and soon it will be all local driving for me and I dont tow anything bigger than an ATV. So I think I would come out just as good not spending the extra for a diesel up front or the extra at the pump and just get another gas engine that gets better MPG. I know it wont get 25-27 like a diesel but 18-19 would suit me just fine.

Don't just look at price of diesel versus gas engine.  Diesel along with gas prices are going down and will continue to do so.  Diesels last a lot longer than gas engines, they are less costly to maintain in the long run, have mroe HP/torque.  Honestly tho, to each his own.  I am just putting another point of view out there.

I agree with everything you said. If I was a guy that kept a vehicle more than 2 years I would also agree that diesel would be the way to go. I dont trade every couple of years for warranty or reliability issues or anything like that. I just like the change so I never keep a truck for long. But yes I agree if I was buying one with the intention of paying it off and keeping it the diesel would be a smart purchase. I am only staying Dodge this time so I can swap the wheels and tires I purchased for this onto the new one. I am also not brand loyal for auto's, I will drive a dodge, chevy, ford, yota, nissan. I have owned em all and havent been burned by any brand yet.
